Suddenly peeing in bed (not potty trained yet)

My son started sleeping in his big boy bed last week. He is almost 3 and isn't even close to being potty trained yet. He still wears pull ups, and we never had an issue with peeing in the bed. The last two nights he has managed to pee in his bed 3 times.

Yesterday I thought maybe it was just a diaper fail, but now I suspect that he is pulling down his diaper and peeing on the bed on purpose. His diaper showed no signs of him peeing through but yet there was a big pee puddle on his bed. My husband thinks this sounds a bit devious for a toddler.

What's up with this?!? Is this his way of protesting the big boy bed? Has this happened to you and how did you address it?

Wow, it seems pretty impressive for him to pull down his pull up, pee, pull it back up, and fall back asleep (if it's during the night).  

Hmm..  If it were me I'd try a diaper and see what happens.  It's not as easy to pull off without evidence so you'd know for sure if he's behind the action.  If he is then maybe ask him why and try to talk up the big boy bed as a fun thing, not a bad thing.
