It's not really my style, I would prefer Carson or Christian. I know a little girl named Karsten (spelled with a K). It reminds me of Kirsten or something. It's not horrible, but like I said, not my style.
I like the way it looks, spelling wise, but pronunciation wise it sounds a bit feminine to me. not that there's anything wrong with that, but I think Carson or Christian both sound "stronger"

I know a Carston, who is a boy, so the name is a good association for me.

I think it has kind of a strange sound to it. I think it's kind of close to Kristen or Kirsten; I would probably go with Carson or Christian instead, like pp's mentioned.
Carten sounds liek it could fall into the cullen callan carson carter pile and not be seen for its heritage.
I was proposed to by the hottest 17yo german hunk ever.....(I was only 12 and he said he's wait for me LOL) named Fabian; it is an awesome name if you're looking for something strong but not quite heinrich!
Re: How do you feel about the name Carsten for a boy?

This. I'm not a fan of Carsten. It sounds a bit harsh to me for some reason.
Hmmm...
I like the name in theory, and I know it's a German first name, but it SOUNDS like it belongs in the suname-for-a-first-name trend.
That said, don't hate it.
