LO around someone with shingles

Tomorrow is my cousins memorial at my parents and there will be family in town that have never met Ava. One cousin was visiting a relative of ours who is just getting over shingles and that relative is coming too :( Obviously Ava hasnt had chicken pox yet and Im afraid she may catch it since so many have been exposed. Is it spread via air or does someone have to actually come in contact with the blisters? I would feel awful if we didnt go but more so if one of us got sick especially LO. My husband had it and it was awful :( I can bring her an keep her upstairs at my moms and hang up there with her and that way some can still "see" her, God knows I wont be passing her around but I still have reservations about the whole thing and know my passed loved one would understand.

Re: LO around someone with shingles

  • When i worked in the nursing home any of the ladies that where pregnant where not allowed to be in the same room as the person with singles. i would look it up or call your oncall pedi to see

  • Two days after we brought LO from the hospital my neighbor who we are really close with got diagnosed with shingles. I totally freaked. She had held LO a few times. Obviously I didn't know she had them (nor did she) or she wouldn't have held him. I called the pedi totally a basket case and he said that DS would have to touch the blisters. We kept our distance and I didn't let her hold him but he was fine.
  • They reccomend that young babies not be around it until 48 hours after person has been diagnosed. Our sitter had it and we had to take DS home for 2 days. Lucklily he did not catch chicken pox Smile

  • MIL had shingles when DS was 1 month old.  To contract chicken pox from someone with shingles you have to come in contact with the blisters.  So I would say that if your relative is getting over shingles then just don't let them hold your LO.

Someone with shingles can only give someone chicken pox, and once you've had chicken pox you can't get it from someone with shingles.

FYI: the chicken pox vaccine has a flaw, in that a person can still get a mild case of chicken pox.  So I would not let any young people hold or play with your LO if they have been exposed to this relative with shingles.  We couldn't let LO near any of our DH's nephews or nieces when MIL had shingles, because they might have contracted a mild case of chicken pox even though they had been vaccinated.
