teething tablets-does the belladonna not scare you???

I see on here everyone always recommending the teething tablets.  I looked into them and asked my pedi and he said absolutely not due to the belladonna.  Are you all aware it's poison and a halluciagen?  Yes, if taken in high doses but homeopathic drugs are not regulated and there is a scary story on the internet about a baby "tripping" out at night and after taken to the hospital the doctor found 50 x the amount of belladonna in the pill than the box said.  I understand the same could be said for tylenol, but ever wonder why the teething tablets are making your babies chill out and sleep better???  Just curious!!  It freaks me out too much although all my friends swear by them!

  • when giving our kids anything premade/prepackage we are putting our faith in the manufactuer to make sure this product is what it says. There is no where near enough belladonna in one tablet to cause this effect on a child, they are a natural way to help relieve the pain and discomfort of teething. I'd rather give my son all natural teething tablets than pump him full of Tylenol or Mortin when its unneeded.

This and it works a million times better and my Pedi suggested them.

  • Just butting in...

We had our pedi suggest them and said there was not near enough to cause such an effect. Though, sadly, they do not help DD at all. Poor girl.

  • from what I researched the amount that is in there is like 0.00003% and in very small amounts belladonna is used to decrease swelling in the gums.

On the hylands website it says that a baby could eat the whole bottle and have no side effects.

So no, I have no issue with it.

  • We use them. Also I had a friend who's LO got a hold of the bottle. (He's 2 and she has a 5 month old) They had no idea how many the 2 yr old had eaten, so she called poison control. They said that he could have taken the whole bottle and they wouldn't be worried. FWIW.

  • No, it does not scare me AT ALL! I take a number of homeopathic remedies and belladonna is in some of them.

  • the tone of your OP is a bit much. Yes, I DO know what causes her to "chill" out, so relax.

I know I'm just a humble newb, but I agree.

  • Wow, people were quite harsh on you.... My doc also said no and I didn't even bother asking why.  Everyone recommends them but we've stayed away.
  • Belladonna in teething tablet + non-childproof caps = scared DrL. My nephew walked around shaking the container like a candy container, and I warned my sister that she should at least not let him wander around with it in case he got it open.

In such small amounts I'm not terribly concerned, but the combination makes me nervous.

I'm also not thrilled about the fact that the Hyland's gel has caffeine.

So do you use them?  If not, what do you use?

  • I'm not concerned at all. I've been using them for over 20 years now and would rather use one or two of those over Tylenol.

  • We have not used these yet, but we were planning on it when needed as opposed to tylenol. I'll admit, I wasn't aware of belladonna, but I did read this on the Little Remedies site when looking into the tablets:

"Please note: If your baby has been crying or is very upset, your baby may fall asleep after using this product because the pain has been relieved and your child can rest."

And that made sense to me...

  • They don't do anything for DS so no, I'm not concerned.
  • Well, the Jack Daniels we were rubbing on his gums didn't seem to be helping so we thought the tablets might work better...it does scare me though that some people will believe every story they read on the internet.
  • I feel informed enough with the purpose and process of homeopathy to go ahead with Hylands. It's remedies like Oragel that have me concerned, not homeopathics.

If there were belladonna leaves in the container for D to chew on, then I'd be raising an eyebrow at Hylands.

  • I am with most people here. The amount in them is not enough to cause harm and I'd rather use this form than orajel or something like that.
