I am currently breastfeeding my 5 month old and since she was born I feel like she's attached to me ALL the time. We saw a lactation consultant when she was 3 months old and apparently she did not think we had any problems. But, I have noticed since that she has to eat through about 3 or 4 let downs which takes a long time. She will stay at the breast for about 30-40 minutes. I will start and have a let down within 2 minutes and she will "gulp" and actively eat for about a minute or two then she goes into the small sucking. Then in about 7 minutes I will have a let down and she will actively eat for a minute or two. Then the next let down about 10 minutes later and again she will eat for 1-2 minutes. It seems like its not enough for her and she always seems hungry. I'm getting very frustrated b/c I have other things that I must do and 40- an hour feeding session is not ideal especially after she will eat and I will lay her down & she will want to eat again in 30 minutes for the same pattern.
Is this normal? What can I do to have her actively eating longer. I can remember this one moment of breastfeeding when she actively ate for about 5 minutes straight. I haven't had one of those moments since.
Re: Short multiple letdowns... what is normal?
Has she always taken that long to eat? Normal is different for everyone. I really only think I get 1 letdown.. I'm not even sure (I only "felt" one). I never see those type of clear clues that everyone else talks about.
Back when I was still nursing (I am back to EPing but that's a whole nother story) -- Tristan took in a good 3oz in a matter of 7-10 minutes. Sorry I don't have any advice.
