Anyone on Labatalol?

I started this yesterday (swiched from methyldopa) and OMG-I may not be able to tolerate this BP med.  About 45 min after taking the 1st dose my scalp itched so bad I thought I had a thousand ants crawling on my head!  I looked up side effects and one of the biggies is "scalp and skin tingling".  Tingling?  That was NOT tingling!

Anyone else experience this?

Re: Anyone on Labatalol?

  • I was on Labatalol for a couple of months after my delivery with DD. I remember a slight itch at first, but nothing like you're describing. I'd talk with your doc about it and see if there is something else you can take. It sounds like you might be having an allergic reaction to it.

  • My dr. changed me over to it when I told her we were TTC.  I was a little dizzy & nauseous at first but never itchy.  I agree with PP, worth a call to your dr.

  • I'm on it and I've never had any issues, but have had issues with other BP medicines.  I would definitely call.
  • I have been on it for 2 years now, and have never experinced that, only dizzyness/and passing out when first put on it, and when the dosage is adjusted, I currently take 500MG 2X per day; in addition to 10MG of Hydrochlorothiazide. I would call the doctor right away...

    IT'S A GIRL

  • Yes I am currently taking this medicine and about an hour after taking the pill my scalp starts crawling. So this is definitely not unusual. Hang in there!
  • The same thing happened to me the first time I took it, i dug the instructions out of trash and read side effects. Probably only happened first week taking and havent happened since.

  • I am a lurker on this board because in the future I will be here....Anyway, I was given Labatalol in the hospital after the birth of DD and it made my scalp do the exact same thing. It is a very weird sensation! I asked my nurse and even the OB when he came around about it and they said that this is a very normal side effect. Good luck!

  • i have been on it since before the birth of my first child (2.5 years), and i never had the scalp thing.  but when i was first put on it i felt like i was going to pass out every time i took it, and it made me super dizzy.  i'd call your doc.

  • Just to update, I have been on this for almost a week now and the horrible scalp tingling/itching is getting better.  I still get a little when I take it, I just have to be careful to not take it 30-45 before I hope to fall asleep!!!

  • A little late here but when we started to TTC, this is the bp med my dr prescribed.  I had the tingling thing start within a day (like if your hand falls asleep but instead your whole head) and that turned pretty much constant and then a couple days later severe itching.  I stopped taking it because between the two side effects I was going to scratch my whole head off and I now list it as an allergy.

Dr acted like she wasn't aware these were possible side effects and actually made me come in to see that it had stopped after I stopped taking it before she would prescribe something else.
