Trouble TTC

XP: Can you tell if ovulation has occurred on an ultrasound?

Hi everyone!

I took Clomid this cycle - but I didn't have any mature follies on my day 14 scan. I thought I might be experiencing ovulation pains a week or so later (which was last Friday) and had textbook EWCM. I went for an ultrasound this Wednesday and there was fluid build-up in my uterus? My doc said I may have ovulated. Can you tell this on an ultrasound? Wouldn't they have also had to have seen a corpus luteum? TIA!!!

Re: XP: Can you tell if ovulation has occurred on an ultrasound?

  • Sometimes, but it is hard to tell the difference between a corpus luteum and a regular cyst.  I've had the nurses tell me my lining looks post ovulatory, but my bloodwork said I was about to O.  Did they do bloodwork to check your progesterone levels?

  • No bloodwork. My doc said it is hard to tell when ovulation might have occurred so the bloodwork might not be accurate (as far as progesterone). She said to wait 2 weeks- if I am not pregnant and have not had a period, then take provera. Ugghh
  • At my 7dpo appt, I had an u/s and b/w done. The language I heard at the u/s was that there was "one dominant follicle" and its measurments, as well as position, and the presence of "debris". The b/w confirmed ovulation based on progesterone levels.

So I will say that yes, they could see that I ovulated in the u/s but couldn't confirm it for sure without the b/w.

I was scheduled for a beta tomorrow, but AF came today.

  • I went in the day after my IUI and had a sono to make sure that the follicle "popped" which would mean I ovulated. I asked them what they would do if the follicle didn't "pop" and they said they would give me a higher dose of the trigger shot next time.
  • I had an ultrasound last week on CD19 before my SHG, and the ultrasound tech and later my doctor said that it looked like I had ovulated because there was fluid behind my uterus.  As for if it could be something else and not ovulation, I'm not sure...just wanted to pass along that I had the same experience, FWIW.
