Moses basket as a bassinet

Hello All,

I had a question about the Moses basket. Can this also be used as a nighttime bed for a newborn before it's moved to the crib? Our house is small and we don't have space for a bassinet in the bedroom. I've read a lot about Moses baskets and it seems like it would be a perfect fit.

 Thanks!

Re: Moses basket as a bassinet

  • I think that would be a great idea. You can even buy rocking stands to put them on if you want them to be higher up next to the bed. We didn't use our basket as a bassinet, but it is invaluable now. For some reason DD prefers taking naps in there (I think because it is somewhat enclosed), and when she has a cold, it is very easy to prop the mattress up to keep her elevated - much easier than the crib mattress.

So, my long answer is yes - it is a great idea and would be much more useful than a bassinet even much farther down the road!

  • Personally, I would not use the Moses basket prior to a crib -- I just don't feel confident in their safety... I don't trust them. I'm not even a big fan of people carrying baby around in them -- please don't flame...

You can get one of those co-sleeper or infant supporty thing -- I found this on BRU

(As I said, if you want baby with you, I wouldn't use the Moses basket for sleeping...just my 2 cents..)  Every baby is different, sleeping patterns (mine was pretty active and liked to move around, as is every room situation/set-up)...

  • I agree w/ sLsue.  I don't think they are regulated for safety.

I'd go with either an Arm's Reach Mini Cosleeper, or, a Graco Travel Lite crib.  They're both fairly small... and, fold up easily for storage.  I had to CoSleeper, but, only b/c it was given to me.  If I were buying on my own, I'd probably pick the Travel lite crib.  Graco stuff is really light and easy to deal with.  The co-sleeper is a little trickier to fold and unfold.
