IUI success rate for unexplained IF?

Background: We've been ttc for 22 cycles. All tests (cd3 bw, hsg, SA, etc.) came back normal. Both MH and I are 30.

When we were ready to try something more my RE suggested clomid (although I O on my own each month) and TI. After two cycles on clomid and no BFP, we took last month off and just did the natural thing. We have an appt. with the RE in a couple weeks to talk about next steps. I believe he is going to suggest clomid + IUI this time and I'm all for it if it works.

Anyone have any experience or stats on how successful IUI is for couple with unexplained IF? I did a google search and didn't really come up with much. Thanks!

Re: IUI success rate for unexplained IF?

  • I believe that success rates might be a little higher for IUI + injectibles, but even so, I think it's only 20-25%, which is the "normal" rate of conception for a couple without infertility in any given month.
After 5 years of TTC, 3 IUIs, 5 IVFs, 2 FETs, multiple losses and an adoption that wasn

  • I have always understood IUIs to have a success rate of about 20% in general, which is about the same success rate as a couple on their own without fertility issues.

I am sure someone else may have more information.

  • I found a really good info sheet on IUI's, here's the paragraph on success rate:

A couple who have been trying to become pregnant for 2 years and have been investigated and found to have no apparent cause (idiopathic infertility) for their infertility have a 2% chance per month of getting pregnant. If that couple is given clomiphene and continues with intercourse their chance may increase to about 5% per month for 6 to 12 months. However, if they participate in an IUI program combined with the clomiphene, their monthly chance rises to 10 to 15%. The pregnancy rate experienced with this treatment is remarkable considering many couples have already tried clomiphene citrate with intercourse. Because the success rate of IUI is only 10 to 15% per cycle, it may take several cycles to become pregnant. Up to six cycles can be done before the chance per attempt decreases significantly.

  • I don't know the stats but if you want anecdotal evidence - worked for us!

We tired for about 20 cycles before we got tested. I O'd fine, DH sperm was borderline (morphology not count) but not classified as MFI. RE said it was unexplained IF. Two rounds of clomid+IUI and we got our BFP!

    Good luck!!

  • My RE said IUI with injectables for unexplained IF was a 12-20% success rate.  It worked for us!  Clomid + IUI did not however.  Good luck to you!

  • I have unexplained IF (so far, almost 3 years in) and we did 2 IUIs + Clomid last summer that didn't work.  Honestly, I wish we'd saved our money from those until we had done more extensive testing, etc.

If I had it to do over again, I would have seen an RE sooner (we did the IUIs with my regular OB/GYN) and done my Lap/Hysterscopy (which I did a couple of weeks ago) before starting down the IUI path...

*TTC since February 08* 2 IUIs that didn't take, exploratory LAP and hysterscopy in September 2010 that revealed nothing, means we're adopting! • Hi Lisa,

DH and I are also unexplained.  I'm 31 and he's 36.  We had all the testing done and we too were normal.  RE suggested Clomid and we tried for 3 cycles w/IUI (not TI), even though I O on my own also.  We moved onto injectables w/IUI and first cycle it worked!  Unfortunately, I had a m/c.  I just started treatment again this month with injectables and hope it works again like last time.  GL to you!!

P.S. You may want to post this on SAIF.
