How do you thaw frozen milk?

I start back to work tomorrow and want to make her bottles for the day don't really trust MiL or DH to do it right. So do I just throw the frozen bags in the refrigerator over night?

Re: How do you thaw frozen milk?

  • i put the bags in the fridge late afternoonish for use the next morning. Sometimes they are a little slushy still so we just run the bag under warm (not hot water) - if your worried about a rip in the bag, put the milk in another bag and then run under water. - my LO will take a bottle cold so i just need to make sure all the "ice" is out.

  • I put the bags in the fridge the night before, then put them in bottles in the morning and use a bottle warmer to warm them up.

We also sometimes take them right from the freezer and let them sit in warm water for a little while.

  • I just take them right out of the freezer and run them under warm water or heat the water in the microwave and then drop the bag in the bowl for a few minutes.

  • I don't defrost over night.  If I need a bag of frozen milk I put them in a bowl of cold water while I am taking my shower/ getting ready for the day.  Once defrosted (in cold water it only takes about 15 minutes) I then transfer them to bottles.  While it's defrosting I check on it every couple of minutes and bring down the ice from the top of the bag to the bottom where it defrosted first (I hope this makes sense). Also - sometimes the bags are still a little slushy when I transfer them to the bottles - for me this is okay because I put them in the fridge and the slush is gone before it's time for use. We also serve our bottles warm.

BTW - I never defrost in hot/ warm water.  Always in cold.

  • I foudn it was best to take the milk right out of the freezer and thaw in warm water.   That way I wouldn't have to waste it if she didn't eat it with in 24 hours.
