Baby Names

Am I the only one?

All of the new, popular names do not appeal to me.  Many of them either remind me of 'old ladies' or older people or sound too super trendy and remind me of popular movies or reality tv.

I hope I am not offending anymore.   I just wanted to see if anyone else feels this way also.  It just seems like everyone wants to use such a different name or use a popular name and change the spelling. Everyone has their own opinion.  I am a bit happy that I do not like most of the real popular names and the names my friends like because that way no one will be mad at me (in family or friend circle) for using their name, lol.

We are planning on using all family names.  If the baby is a boy it will be my husband's name (Emerson III) and if it is a girl I am leaning towards Kelly Grace (Kelly was my mother's maiden name).  (Grace is pretty popular now but this is one I do love). Some people may dislike these names also, but it has meaning for us.

Re: Am I the only one?

  • Emerson is obviously an older name, but I consider Kelly to be dated-trendy. I dislike modern trendy names and really dislike dated-trendy names. And I LOVE archaic names and all those venerable "old-lady" names you're impugning. Everyone has different opinions, you can't come on a national board and expect to find most people in agreement with you. Honestly, the board would be a pretty boring place to hang out if you did.
  • Honestly, I see Emerson as being a trendy, new name - although cleary it isn't in your case.  But that's how I would classify it if I heard it.  And even though I see Kelly as 80s dated, I do still like it.  I actually know someone who just named their daughter Kelly Grace.

I can agree with you on the "sound too super trendy and remind me of popular movies or reality tv" part ... cannot STAND trendy names and misspelled names.

    This totally.

Good for you sticking with names that you LOVE and are meaningful to you; There's no way you'll regret names like that. The trendy names lose there appeal fast.

  • No, you're def not alone.  We don't like any of the newer, trendy names.  We like traditional and classic names.

  • Eh. I find appeal all over the board. I have to say that I like that feminine names like Sophia, Isabella and Emma are in vogue for girls. I'm tired of the androgyny of Mackenzie and Kennedy.

But I can't say I really despise any trend. Every time I do, I find an exception. Like "I hate surnames for first names" but "I love Delaney!" OR "I hate popular  names" but "I love Emma!".

I am into the old school trend going on, but I have to admit that I can find one appealing name in most every trend, even if I dislike the trend on the whole. I think Melanie is a great name, even if it IS an 80's has-been, and I still really like Jessica, even if it's long past its expiration date.

  • I agree. DH and I are not a fan of the trendy names/spellings. We plan on using family names also.

I'm not a fan of the old lady/old man names either.  To me, they just don't seem fitting for a sweet little infant or toddler.

but you do realize your child is only a child for a short portion of it's life, right? It's not going to stay a baby forever..

DH and I agree with you too.

  • I agree with you on the trendy, new names, but I do love old fashioned names.  A lot of it may depend upon a family's ln.  Our is super common so based upon my DH's expereince with a super common fn we tey to find uncommon/popular fns to save our children some frustration.

All my cousins like trendy or occupation names so I never have to worry about using the same names as them :)
