Induction when cervix is on lock down

So, my doctor and I started talking induction today since my due date is on Sunday and it is looking like I am going to go over.  He wanted to induce 1 week post delivery date, but I was pushing for 2.  We agreed to induce at 42 weeks, 1 day should it become necessary.  I know things can change day to day, so I am hoping he will come on his own, but so far my cervix is very posterior, not effaced, and not dialated.  LO is so high it looks like I have a basketball stuffed under my throat and I have had 0 contractions that I know of. Has anyone here had a successful induction under these circumstances? I am also terrified that the induction will result in the use of vacuum forceps since every male in my family has dx of seizure disorder (including both of my brother's sons) and I know that the two have been correlated.

Re: Induction when cervix is on lock down

  • My friend didn't have an induction, but was quickly approaching her EDD with no progress just like you, and her daughter was born the day after her EDD without her having to be induced. Things can change very quickly! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :)

  • I had to jump in on this--I'm lurking from the 6-9 board.   I was induced at 42 weeks--however I wound up with a c-section because i WOULD NOT let them use the vaccum on my baby.  You have the right to say no to that.  It was the best decision we made, DD turned her head to the side and coudln't get under the pelvic bone--I had told my OB I didn't want forceps or vaccum so we moved right to c-section after 3 hrs of pushing---

My brother in law broke his collar bone after forceps were used and my friend's son had a seizure 5 min after birth by vaccum extraction which is why I didn't want either used on my baby.  SPEAK UP now and let your doc's know you don't want either--you have a say!!

And FYI---C-sections are really not bad at all, I didn't want to have to have one, and I was scared but looking back it wasn't all that bad.

  • oh gosh, try to relax!! I didn't go into labor until 41w1d with my DS, which is average for first-time moms. I had an induction scare the day before I started labor, and when my MW checked me, my cervix was doing nothing (and I was carrying DS super-high also! He didn't start dropping until I started labor). So you have 2.5 weeks to go into labor, which is great - and something like 90+% of women go into labor on their own by 42 weeks.

If it comes down to induction, you have a right to say no to a vacuum delivery. And having to make the decision probably wouldn't be a "make this decision right this second!!!" kind of thing. hth and it'll be okay!

Thanks for the encouragement ladies.  I know I could go into labor naturally any time, but I like to hope for the best and prepare for the worst :)   Very interesting mommymar, that is exactly what he said my son is doing.  He is laying crooked and his head is side ways and is not descending into the pelvis.  Hopefully it will self correct, but I am also pro c-section instead of vacuum if necessary and told my doctor today.  He said his head could be pushed back upward and then he could section, but it is a little on the difficult side, but doable.  Anyways, hopefully LO will cooperate and things will go smoothly.  Also great to hear your c-section wasn't bad and your LO is absolutely adorable!

  • Have you checked out spinningbabies.org?  It's not just for breech babies - you can work on some inversions, pelvic tilts, etc. to encourage your LO to straighten out and it the pelvis correctly.  I'd do that, do some work on the birth ball, and consider curb walking and just see what happens over the next two weeks.

Without a hopeful Bishop's score, I probably would be loathe to induce at any point.  If you don't begin dilating a bit, I'd consider asking for cervical ripening before pitocin.

  • I did.

With DD1 I was induced at 39w2d for pre-e. No dilation, no effacement, she hadn't completely dropped yet and I had a very firm, posterior cervix. It took 28 hours total: 12 hours of cervadil overnight (which only got me to 50% effaced), started pitocin just after that and my water broke on its own about 4 hours later. I was only around a "finger tip" dilated at that point, but fully effaced. Got an epidural a couple hours later at 1cm, and went all the way to 10cm fairly quickly after that. Pushed for a little over 2 hours and delivered her vaginally.

Never at any point were either of us in distress, or did they think I'd need a c-section. It was very successful, and despite being a long process (though still shorter than some of my friend's regular non induced labors!) it wasn't bad at all. Not all inductions have to be horror stories or one-way tickets to the OR :) Good luck! You still have plenty of time to make progress on your own too, it can happen overnight!

I'm a first time mom, so I have absolutely no experience myself.  With that being said, and my only "official" research being what I have seen on the Baby Story, make sure that you ask your OB if they use the vaccum during a C-section too.  I have seen several episodes where the mom's got c-sections and the docs used vacuums to extract the baby from the incision.  So, if vacuum and forceps is what you truly want to avoid, just talk with your OB to make sure that they are not used at all!

Also, try acupuncture/acupressure or reflexology to help induce labor.  There are several points around the foot and ankle that are recommended to help induce labor.  Good luck to you on the birth of your baby!!

  • With my first daughter I was induced at 39 weeks because of GD.  I too had expreienced 0 contractions, and my cervix had not started doing anything at all.  Everything went fine!  The potossin (sp?) got my contractions going immediately, but my cervix was not cooperating.  Eventually the Dr. broke my water and then everything moved along quickly.

Don't worry about it!  As others have said, things can change quickly; but above all, have some faith in your Doctor's expertise... he does this everyday.
