Leukemia

Leukemia is a cancer of the blood and the leading cause of death for people under 20. Blood cells change and grow uncontrollably. There are two types of leukemia: acute and chronic. Acute leukemia progresses rapidly while chronic is much slower. People with ALL (Acute lymphocytic leukemia) are frequently anemic because they don?t have enough red blood cells. They are also very susceptible to infection and bruise or bleed effortlessly. Unlike ALL, CLL (Chronic lymphocytic leukemia) progresses slowly and therefore symptoms might take years to appear and in some cases the patient might not even need treatment for it. Unfortunately, there is another type of CLL that requires prompt treatment. However, this is only 1% of all CLL cases. Since patients with leukemia are more susceptible to infections fever is likely to occur. The most common symptoms of leukemia are weakness and fatigue, swollen or bleeding gums, sweating, loss of appetite and weight, fever, tiny red spots under the skin, bone or join pain etc? The main types of treatments for leukemia are radiotherapy, chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant and immunotherapy. At times elements from each of the four treatments are utilized simultaneously to ensure the prompt and absolute eradication of cancer.
