Particularly for when you are trying to make a perfect ponytail with no bumps on top. I find as her hair gets longer, its harder to achieve this. I must be missing some tricks.
Well, DD is barely old enough for me to put hers in a pony, but I use a small round brush when I want no bumps. Otherwise, I use either a comb when it's wet or her very favorite cheap pink princess brush that she picked out at Target.
I use a large paddle brush and then use a small comb, those small black ones that are about 5" long. Her hair has to be wet so it will all stay down and then I spray with hair spray.
For smooth, no-bumps I use a Conair boar-bristle brush.
I agree. A boar-bristle brush, or even one with synthetic bristles like a boar-bristle will get the hair the smoothest. Obviously you'll really need to detangle it well first, because those types of brushes aren't good for detangling. It will pull a lot and hurt, which will make her squirm, making it even harder to get it smooth!

I have a paddle brush. When I want it smooth, I take one of her old baby brushes, run it under water for a second, and use that to smooth.
Then it all falls out a minute and a half later anyway, because she has fine hair.
