I'm traveling to Venezuela next month. The flight from Fort McMurray arrives to Toronto at 6 am. Then the flight to Venezuela departs at 7 pm. So I have aprox. 12 hours between flights.
I'm thinking to go to Toronto to spend the day there, and then come back to the airport.
Is the airport too far from the city/downtown? Am I crazy for doing this with a toddler?
Also, if it is feasible to go to Toronto for some hours. What would you recommend me to do?
TIA
Re: XP: Questions for Toronto bumpies
The airport is 20-40 minutes from downtown (depending on time of day). I don't think it is crazy at all to spend the day in Toronto. But keep in mind you will have to be back at the airport at 4PM.
You could go to the zoo (not downtown but similar distance from airport). Downtown options would be the CN tower, hockey hall of fame, science center, ROM, Pioneer village.
What day of the week are you flying in? If it's a week day, you'll hit rush hour traffic going into the city which means it will most likely take you a little over an hour. The other question is - how well does your baby travel? I know from experience that mine does not travel well and I was exhausted the last time I flew with him.
I'm not sure if they do this, but it might be an idea to call some of the hotels around the Toronto airport to see if they offer day rates for hotel rooms. If you can get a hotel with a pool, you can take your LO swimming, have time to shower, grab something to eat and maybe even have a nap before you head back to the airport.
The Sheraton hotel is attached to the airport. It might be a good start. They might also be able to suggest some day trips that are close to the airport.
I think the day rate for a hotel is a great idea.
Personally, I wouldn't venture downtown due to traffic problems unless I really really wanted to see the city and knew I would never get another chance to do it.
There are a lot of things you can do closer to the airport. There is a mall called Woodbine Centre that your little one would LOVE. It is a normal mall but there is an amusement park in it. They have a huge play area, a train ride, bumper boats, etc. My kids looooove it there. You could easily spend an afternoon there.
Another nice mall in the area is Sherway Gardens. But it's just a nice mall.
If there is something interesting going on at the convention centre you could go there too.
