Success after IF

Do you ever get annoyed...

by people who can't spell your name correctly? I find this particularly irksome when (1) my name is very common and (2) it's part of the email address AND in the signature. How hard is it to check before responding?

And don't even get me started on people who call me by the wrong name when I answer the phone.

Re: Do you ever get annoyed...

  • Oh yeah, my name is Meghan and people on my step-dad's side of the family (mom has been married to him for 20 years) still spell my name wrong!  Hello, it's not that hard.

  • lol! Our builder keeps writing my name: Anjie.  Who spells Angie like that!?

We joke that it's the Dutch version. (Because our girls have Dutch names.)

  • My name can be spelled with a C or a K. Mine starts with a K but I constantly get emails from people spelling it with a C, which wouldn't be that bad except that they're usually in response to an email I sent with my name spelled out and my email address, all with the correct spelling.

  • THANK YOU FOR THIS POST! My name IS my email address, super super common, and yet people will spell it incorrectly all of the time. I think its rude. I think it shows that they're not REALLY paying attention to you. I think its especially rude from someone presenting themselves to be "professional".

    Same here.

I also get annoyed with people who give me a nickname despite the fact that I always introduce myself, sign things, etc with my full name.

  • I have an unusual name that isn't spelled phonetically so it can be a tough one. What annoys me is when I've known or done business with someone for a long time and they still get it wrong. My childhood pastor still calls me by the wrong name to this day.
  • Yup, my name is more common now among younger children but most people spell it Alyssa.  I also get a tone of Alicia's and forget about my last name only people who are Italian know how to say it...
  • My brother's name is Curt. Cur  My parents neighbors that have known him since birth (37 YEARS) have always called him Kirk.  We're pretty close to those neighbors and do the holiday party crap, etc.  How hard is that?

  • My name is Samantha, I introduce myself by my full name and have always gone by my full name.  It's so annoying when right after I introduce myself or pick up the phone and say "This is Samantha" someone calls me "Sam", I wouldn't even think to do that to someone else.
  • Am I alone in really wanting to call these people out? Work contacts are bad enough (totally unprofessional) but people you've known forever - don't you just want to scream "my name's not -----!?"

  • I'm SO used to it with both my first, maiden, and last name that I barely notice!  What I do find BIZARRE is how many people misspell my last name when our only communication has been electronic/written.  Just last week I signed up for something on an internet form, and what I received came back with the wrong spelling; this happens at least once a month.  My last name is spelled with an "an" and people *usually* write "en," and often they change it from "XXdan" to "XXdden."  I understood with my maiden name that the "ei" would become "ie," but changing my married name like this when they have to be copying it directly (i.e. with the address such as onto an envelope, not just by memory) baffles me.

And I'm used to my first name being misspelled too.  I can't imagine misspelling someone's name...I'd rather just type "Hi!" then potentially misspell it. :)

Of course, all three names are equally mispronounced, but at least people seem to try to get them right...usually.  I'm not offended one bit when someone I don't know well or at all doesn't though!

  • My name is Carin so I've become so used to people spelling it wrong that I'm actually surprised when they do get it right!

But you're right, it is a little annoying when I get emails with it spelled Karen or Karin or Caren when it shows up in my email address and in my signature.

  • DH's name is EriCK.  I dont think I have EVER seen a card or note from any of his aunts with his name spelled the right way.  Every time I want to call them and tell them "You have been related to him sense birth, you had 27 years to learn to spell it right.  Learn it!"  My family all spell his name right.
