That 40 min like clockwork wakeup.

My DS wakes up like clockwork at 40 mins. I have seen some other moms also saying there LO does as well. I read the NCSS and have been trying to get him to stay asleep while he switches sleep cycles. I tried shaking the bouncer (that usually just wakes him up for sure)  or waiting for the second he stirs and rocking him, but he will sleep just not let me put him down. Is this something they grow out of? How did you get your LO to sleep through the 40 min timer?

  • DD was a 30-minute napper until probably 9 or 10 months old.  Nothing seemed to help it but time.  She always seemed rested when she woke up and wasn't cranky or anything, so I just figure she was one of those "perfect catnappers."  She has always been at the low end of the guidelines for how much sleep they "should" be getting.

  • I'm not sure if my answer is depressing or reassuring, but DS still wake up after 40 minutes.
  • DD sleeps 30 mins at a time and once in a while I can lay down with her and she will go back to sleep after 30 mins but not too often. She takes naps in our bed since we BS at night she is use to sleeping their.

  • DS doesn't always wake up after his first sleep cycle but he usually does with his morning nap.  I have only had success soothing him back to sleep once or twice so now I keep the monitor close and if he wakes up, I go get him, nurse him and he is usually back out within 10 minutes and stays asleep for another hour or longer.  Probably not the answer you are looking for but it works for us for now, DS gets his rest and I get to clean, do  laundry, etc.  Of course, I cannot leave the house during nap time on the weekend to run errands bc DH is incapable of putting DS back to sleep, so that kind of stinks.  Have you read the NCNS?  She mentions a few other options for blending the shorter nap.
  • I am dealing with the same issue.  At 35 minutes I go sit near his crib.  The second he starts stirring I pick him up and rock him back to sleep.  The key is to rock him for about 15 minutes while he changes cycles.  If you put him back down too soon, he's up for good.  I've tried waiting to see if he can make the transition on his own but it seems once I let him go past the initial stir, I'm out of luck.  I have success with this only about 50% of the time.  I'm hoping it's just a phase!!!
