How old is too old for a sippy?

SS is 5 now. When we go places in the car he takes a cup like this:

Is he too old for it? I dunno what else to have him use so he doesn't spill stuff... What comes after sippys when you're on the go?

Re: How old is too old for a sippy?

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with a 5 year old using a cup with a lid, but I think he's too old for the one you showed.  Technically sippys aren't good for tooth development and should be gone by 2ish years old.

    What about something like this?

  • Yep. DD uses lidded cups with straws. Prevents spills, (she knows by this age not to try to dump it) but isn't bad for her teeth.

  • Can he and does he drink out of a normal cup at home? I would say, that if he drinks out of a regular cup and only uses a sippy in the car or when you're wanting to avoid spills that you're probably ok.

If he's never drinking out of a regular cup, then I'd say that you definitely need to get rid of any and all sippy cups.

  • On-the-go, we use straw sippies. Mainly the Munchkin or Playtex ones.

Technically, our pedi has not mentioned it yet. However, we had a speech therapist come to our mom's group as a guest speaker and she said they'd like to see kids off sippy cups with spouts no later then age 2.  2.5 MAX, for developmental reasons (both mouth/facial muscles and for speech). She said straw cups were totally fine though. I know you said that cup was just for on-the-go with your SS, so I'm sure developmentally, that's fine..I just thought I'd mention all this for anyone else reading ;)

DD1 is 2.5 and her Nuby soft spout sippy is her safety item. I let her use it at home and she sleeps with it (with water only!). She will.not fall asleep w/out it :( I know it's a problem and she is so freaking attached to it. I keep telling her at age 3, no more "baby cup". We'll see what happens....

  • Honestly, with that kind of cup 5 is a little old.  I don't remember for sure when my older girls were off sippy cups but I think it was around 2 then went to straw cups and sport type bottles when out and only regular cups with no lid at home.  Now when we are on the go the kids usually don't need much to drink.  If we are out for a long time I just have them bring a bottle of water with.  They are 6 and 8 now and I want to say it was maybe around 4?? when they started with bottled water like that.
  • Hmmm...I never thought about it.  I guess I should get new cups for my 3 and 4 year old!
