Leapfrog recommendations (4 yo)

Looking at taking advantage of the "buy 2, get one free" deal at TRU.  I have no idea where to begin with Leapfrog systems.  Would like to get the table/groove thing for dd, but Ds is almost 4.  He is already understanding how to sound out words and can write his letters.  wondering which, if any, leapfrog system would be appropriate for him.  Tag, Tag Jr.?  thanks!

Re: Leapfrog recommendations (4 yo)

  • We have the clickstart computer which is super duper lame. We only played with it 1 time. No one was impressed.

He loves his tag.  I wouldn't get the jr.  DS has used the regular one since he was 2.5 just fine.

I also loved the alphabet magnets and am sure DS2 will use them as well. DS1 learned to recognize and say his entire alphabet within a week of playing with them when he was 2ish.

At 4 your DC might be ready for a leapster. I don't know anything about them really.

  • I second the recommendation for a Tag reader. My daughter loves hers.
  • Loading the player...
  • Definitely the Tag reader...my ds got one for his 4th birthday and he was the perfect age for it.
  • my DD (4 yo) got her leapfrog TAG as a big sister gift when my DS was born.  she loves it.

  • I also vote for the Tag. Most books will read the entire page, will go word-to-word, and have games (adding, matching, finding things, rhyming, etc).

Also, google for coupons....something like "tag book coupon 2010."  You may have to nose around, but you can almost always find $3 off/book coupons out there.  You may even find one for the Tag system itself - and TRU will let you stack coupons with their sales.

We have the Leapster and Leapster2.  I wish I would have known the Explorer was coming out, as I would have waited to get that for DS rather than the Leapster2.  Leapster and Explorer games are not interchangeable.

We have the magnetic alphabet - we've had 2 sets actually - love it.  Great for learing sounds/alphabet.  We also have the Fridge Farm.

Also have the Musical Table (Learn N Groove?.not sure of the name).  It's lasted thru all 4 kids & E&G have played with it several times daily for probably 4 mos now.....more than work the $40 or so I spent.

  • I am looking at the leapster explorer for a christmas gift for my two.... it looks cheaper to do the bundle + coupon code SEPBDAY  at the leapfrog website  (vs the TRU sale).

I just added the explorer, a carrying case and 3 cames and the subtotal is $102.  not sure how much shipping is... the shipping is free through TRU right now.    but I added the explorer and 2 games to TRU and it was $95 before tax.
