Daycare won't give meds?

I went to look at a daycare last week and in their policy manual it states that they will not administer any medications (prescribed or over the counter) nor apply any diaper cream.  I assume this is because of liabilty issues but is this the norm for centers?

Re: Daycare won't give meds?

  • Our daycare does give meds - Rx and OTC. We have to fill out a form each day he needs meds, with the time and dosage (they won't do "as needed"). They apply diaper cream as well.

  • In VA you can't adminster meds without having Medication Administration Training which is a couple of days long and requires a test.  When my guys needed nebulizer treatments it sucked because I had to stay home to do them until the provider got her training done - which she did.

The diaper cream, unless it is prescribed, seems a little hard core though.

  • Nope. Our center gives meds and applies cream (and sunscreen in summer) but only a few of the staff are trained in medication dispensing. But any of them can apply creams. We just have to fill out the forms...each day for medicine, monthly for things like diaper cream, etc.

  • My LO just started her daycare last week and they won't give meds either. They will apply diaper cream and give mylicon if LO needs it. She had her 2 month immunizations the day before she went so I took some infant tylenol. They said that mild fever with immunizations was the only time they could administer meds. She never needed it, but it was good to know that I didn't have to have someone go over there just to give her a little tylenol.

  • DD's center will give meds provided they have a doctor's note with very explicit instructions.
  • They will apply diaper cream with parental written consent.  They will administer medicines around noon each day with a doctor's prescription and form filled out.

  • Both of my boys go to Kindercare and they administer OTC and Rx medicines.  I just have to complete a form for each medicine with instructions.  Rx meds must have the name and dosage as labeled by the pharmacy.

  • The doctors and I have to fill out a lot of forms, but daycare administers both prescription and OTC meds.  Only certain staff are certified, but they just tremendously increased the number of med-certified staff.  My daughter has to have an epi-pen nearby, so they HAVE to be able to administer it.
  • Our DC will give OTC meds only if it has clearly written age appropriate directions on the bottle with a parental consent. Rx meds must have a Dr. note. There are only 2 people certified to give meds at the daycare and they only give meds at 11 and 3. They will not give anything as needed. Diaper creams need a parent consent but the form last for a year versus the 1 week for all other meds.

  • Diaper cream? That's crazy, imo. At our daycare we fill out a form for the new classroom (when he moves up) to authorize using diaper cream as needed. Same for sunscreen.

As for prescriptions, they will give them with properly labeled prescription bottles as well as the parental consent form. This includes nebulizer treatments, ect.

I cannot imagine our daycare not being able to give medications (if DS was on anything that was three times a day, needed albuterol, ect).

  • I find that really odd.

Our daycare will give tylenol as needed (we signed a waiver for this), the will use diaper cream (I think we signed for this too), and they'll administer antibiotics as needed, though we have to sign a seperate form in the instance.

  • I assume things vary between here (Canada) and the States. But, ours will give medication if in original bottle with Rx on it and we have to fill out a form. For diaper cream, sunscreen, diaper spray (we do cloth wipes and our own spray solution) we have to sign a form for each. They will give Tylenol if a fever goes above 102F and we are already on our way to pick up DD - but we had to sign a form for that too.
