do 3 year old still use a stroller?

Do 3 year old still use a stroller? i say yes. She thinks that if you have a baby and a 3 year old a double stroller wont be used much. I disagree. What do you think?

Re: do 3 year old still use a stroller?

  • Sorry, but I say no.  My 3 year old has not used a stroller in over 9+ months.  We make him walk.

  • DD is still not 3 and we don't use a stroller very much at all anymore (it's mainly just for carrying stuff, like groceries, not for carrying DD). A double stroller for a 3 year old and baby sounds completely unnecessary to me. Even if your 3 yo occasionally needs the stroller still, you could wear the baby comfortably for at least 4-6 months and I'd say that by 3.5, a kid would definitely be out of a stroller.

  • Depends on the child & depending on what for.  We would not - not even at the zoo. But I have friends that would.  We do however use a double jogging stroller - but only for running.

  • Mine are 17 months apart.

We used our double only a hand full of times.

In the beginning I wore the infant so my hands were free to chase the toddler.

After that the toddler wasn't a fan of being confined in a stroller so a sit and stand was a better option for us.

I think it depends on the older child's personality.

Frankly - we discourage riding in strollers much past 2.

They can walk and frankly need the exercise.  A stroller may be a convenience for the parent but by 3 I don't feel they're a necessity for the child.  By a bit past 2 being confined to a stroller regularly limits their ability to explore their world.

We used the sit and stand or wagon for navigating parking lots of for places that require a lot of walking like the zoo but my youngest is 2.5 and we haven't used a stroller for quite a while now.

In fact... my youngest hikes with us and makes it 2.5 to 3 miles on foot by himself just fine.

So.... I can see where your friend is coming from.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • It totally depends on the kid. My DD still loves her stroller. She gets giddy when we pull into the mall parking lot because she knows we use the stroller there (pretty much the only place we use it anymore). So it's not out of the question for a 3 year old to use it and like it.

    This.

My DD loves to ride in the stroller as well. She usually walks (of course) but when we go to the mall or zoo for long periods of time, she will definitely ride in the stroller. Why not? Their legs get tired too.

  • Depends on where you live. We are in an urban area and while we don't use it often, we do use it if we are going to be walking for miles. DD can walk about 1-2 miles but gets tired after that. Yesterday we went to the zoo then walked a couple of miles from there and it was great to have the stroller. i also use it if I am alone with DD and need to take the dog for a walk. Other than that, 3 is kind of old to use it for no reason or at the mall, etc.
  • I think it also depends on where you live.  In the city it is pretty normal to see 3 year olds in strollers, especially in really crowded areas.  My friend's 3.75 year old still uses a stroller when we go places like the zoo or the museum.

Personally, I would think you would get the most use out of something like a sit and stand or a Phil and Teds or a stroller boogie board.

  • My 29 month old hates sitting in the stroller.  She usually walks.  If we take the stroller I usually just use if for my packages.  I'm debating on what to do in Disney this December.  I wanted a baby jogger, but think it's going to be a waste of money, so I'm thinking of a sit and stand.

  • DS is 28 months and has refused his stroller for the last 2 months if not more... We actually just bought a new double and were going to get a double sit and stand but he had an absolute FIT when I tried to get him to stand on it. So I opted for a double that can use both infant seats instead... He can still use it if we're somewhere and he changes his mind... but the twins will get a ton of use out of it.
  • I use a stroller usually at least 1x a day with my 2.5 year old.  He doesn't like getting in initially usually, but within a minute he is fine and most importantly I know where he is and he is safe.
