It's not terrible, but I prefer giving a name that would give a person options. Maybe your child won't want to go by a nn their whole life. I personally love the name Samuel.

This. I have a brother named Samuel but he's always been Sam to everyone. That or Sammy to me (he hates it!). Oh, and Shamu when he was a wee one because he was a chunker!
I'm not a fan of any of the Samuel/Sam/Samson names. However, Sam is my favorite of them by far. I don't think there is anything wrong with "just Sam". In fact, I know a couple who planned to do the same if they had a boy (though they ended up with two girls).

Normally I feel like you should use the full name in case they want to use it as an adult, but in this case I think it's OK because Sam works fine on an adult man. It's when people use names like Charlie or Maggie instead of Charles or Margaret that it bugs me because those nicknames sound very childish to me.
Re: Thoughts on using just "Sam"
I agree.

LOL @ Shamu :P
Not terrible at all. My son is "just Alex."
