Applesauce = terrible diaper rash

Anyone else experience this?

Logan was eating quite a bit of applesauce (he loves it) and developed a bad case of diaper rash. We narrowed it down to that and cut it out. The diaper rash went away. We started giving him just a little bit again and it came back. Anyone have any idea how long we should wait before trying again or should we just forget it altogether?

ETA: I make my own baby food except for applesauce. I use natural applesauce, but could the additional Vitamin C cause the problem? Should I try making my own?

Re: Applesauce = terrible diaper rash

  • in my xp, YES!

    my lo gets rotten diaper rash from apple juice, but NOT from apples or applesauce I make. he's ok with small amounts of pre-made applesauce, but his next poop is acidic.

    applesauce is SUPER easy to make. give it a try!

    take your apples, peeled, and put them in a pot with a little water. cook. add more water if needed, or leave lid off if too wet. mash or puree to desired consistency. add vanilla/ nutmeg/ cinnamon/ sugar but only if you want. different apples taste quite differently and have different textures too... have fun!

  • Thanks! I'm going to give that whirl next weekend. I'm making peas, carrots & sweet potatoes today. :)

    Is there an apple you suggest for the first try?  How many apples would make an ice cube tray worth?

  • We've been super lucky and had no rash problems, and DD eats a fair amount of apples, but I make them myself - because it is super easy!  Butting in to your question, I think 3 apples usually makes about an ice cube tray.  I am a tart apple fan so love the Braeburns, but really I buy whatever looks best.  Also, you can bake apples for apple sauce - peel or not (I don't anymore), spray a baking dish and cook for about 20-30 minutes on 350.  Then blend and freeze - baked are a little chunkier in general so you may want to go the stove top route.  I have been baking 2 apples and 2 plums and blending and that's a fav.  GL
