Psoriasis

I have had psoriasis for half of my life and have always been able to treat it with medication to a point where I do not have any noticeable spots (scales). I've been told that some people's psoriasis clears up with pregnancy, but as of right now mine is a little out of control (mostly on my trunk). I spoke with my Dr. and she said that I could use my spray if I was very uncomfortable, but she would prefer for me to wait until after 12 weeks ( I am only 5 weeks and 2 days). I am choosing not to use my medication, but I am very uncomfortable.

I'm  looking for some helpful hints or any suggestions (like lotions or creams) that anyone has used to relieve the itchiness and dryness.

This may be a shot in the dark, but I am hoping that someone can help me. TIA!

Re: Psoriasis

  • I know I'm late answering but I have psoriasis.  I guess I'm "lucky" because its only in my scalp.  Mine got really bad at first because I had to go off my medication the 3 months prior to TTC.  It was awful.  I'd say around the 20 week mark of my pregnancy it cleared up a lot!!  I would use apple cider vinegar and I swear since using that I will never go back to medication again.  Now after I had my baby, it got really bad again and around the 5-6 month mark pp started to clear up again.

  • I also have psoriasis on my scalp and neck, and it got worse while pregnant.  My baby is now 2 months old and its about the same.  I never used meds to control it.  Instead, I did yoga.  Stress causes my flair ups.  Hope yours clears up soon.  GL

  • I have had psoriasis since I was about 9 (and psoriatic arthritis). I have it on my scalp and trunk, but also get flare ups on my arms and legs.  When I got pregnant, I was on a skin ointment called Ultravate, which works really well on my psoriasis, but I had read online that it could have side effects for babies so I stopped immediately.  My skin got REALLY bad!  I had outbreaks on my face, which had never happened before, and it was terribly embarrassing.  My dermatologist suggested using Athlete's Foot Cream on my face.  Really weird, but it kinda worked.  I used Palmer's stretch mark cream on my trunk which really helped with the scaling and itching.  She also told me I could use the Ultravate as long as I did one week on, one week off, and did not cover the equivalent of more than 5 hand palms on my skin.  Around 25 weeks, my psoriasis magically cleared up on it's own and I didn't need to use anything the rest of my pregnancy.  Hormones are crazy!  Hope yours gets better soon!
