we used to have a reg kitchen pail with a diaper pail liner, but it got smelly. I used a diaper pail liner hanging on a doorknob...If I could do it again I would buying a hanging wetbag that is easier to get dirty diapers into.

We use a plastic garbage can with a flip top lid, and a pillowcase for a liner. Very low tech. The key is to have something with air flow to keep the stink away.
We use a simplehuman flip top kitchen pail and a Blueberry liner. I have never noticed a smell in her room. I splurged on the simplehuman one because we have two dogs and that pail has a little lock to keep the lid down. It turns out that the dogs have no interest in the diapers, so any regular lidded trash can would have sufficed.
We use a tall plastic lidded kitchen pail from Target and PlanetWise pail liners. I have two pail liners, and I wash after DD goes to bed every other day. I take the pail liner full of diapers to wash and then I leave the lid of the pail open overnight. This airs it out so that the pail doesn't stink, and I don't have smell issues while the pail lid is closed during the day.

I use this trashcan:

with a Planetwise pail liner. Works great and no smell.
