Calling in sick?

Ladies,

For those of you who work full-time and have bad morning sickness, do you ever call in sick? How often?  Do you feel badly about it?

I have a pretty high stress job, and I had to call in sick this week for the first time in ages.  I feel terrible about it, but I've just been so unbelieveably sick.  My boss didn't seem to mind.  I plan to call in again if I have another day like this past Wed.

Anyone else been there?  How have your bosses/coworkers reacted?

Thanks!

Re: Calling in sick?

  • Nope.  The only time I called in sick was two weeks ago because I could not even come close to functioning.  I didn't know why, I was just *miserable*.  Turns out I had a pretty severe uti.

M/s?  Nope, sorry.  There are ways to deal.

  • My coworkers know about the pregnancy, so I think they understand.  I have never been one to call in sick, but this week I left at 10 one day, and then called in the next day because I was feeling so sh!tty.  I think sleeping for a lot of the day really helped me.
  • I understand how you feel. I have been pretty sick this week as well, but I feel really bad abut calling in this soon but my bosses are pretty understanding, as are my co-workers, especially since i did tell them. (It was getter hard to hide the fact that i was sick to my stomach and so incredibly tired and still insist on being there.) I think that as long as they are understanding, and it's not abused, it should be ok. I'm a nurse, and all I think is that its probably best that a patient see me that sick. They will wonder how if I'm that sick, how can I help them.

  • I work in healthcare and am surrounded by doctors.  I have Zofran and know all the supposed tricks to make myself feel "better".  But it hasn't helped much this week.  I'm not at the point of going to the hospital yet, but we will see how it goes the next few weeks.

Oh well.  Just wanted to see what others were doing.  Thx!  :-)

  • Called in today for the first time.  However, it was more because I was exhausted.  I have plenty of leave to use, and today I had no appointments, so it was a "good" day to take off.

I'm curious what you do for a living. That may affect the way you "deal". I, like the OP, have a high stress job, where I am on my feet most of the time and work 12 hour shifts, so unfortunately there is not always a way to deal!

I teach at a work-place based daycare (aka 9-12 hour days), on my feet, chasing after, cleaning up after and dealing with 19 three and four year old kids (during my first trimester, most were boys).  If I can deal with m/s while sitting down for a total of an hour (broken up throughout the day), wiping butts, changing the occasional diaper, lifting and carrying the kids when necessary, putting out (and cleaning up) 3 meals and 2 snacks, and plunging nasty toilets all without being able to just run to the bathroom whenever I want to (leaving the kids unattended or the other teacher out of ratio)---yeah, most people can find ways to deal.

Small, bland, protein-rich snacks scattered through the day and the right mental attitude go a long way.  I know there are people with SEVERE m/s and need some assistance, but I also know there are a LOT of people on here that pull the "I'm pregnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnant" card and either milk the slight bit of problems they have or think people need to go out of their way to make accommodations for them.   But then again, I think expectant mother parking spots are stupid too.
