My daughter's eczema didn't seem to be getting better with the medicine that the ped gave us. In fact, it looked worse. Her chest and back was covered in red blotchy patches and the medicine started turning them white. I was getting increasingly worried so I made a appointment with a dermatologist today. Turns out it isn't eczema at all but infantile psoriasis. She gave me a steriod foam to use for 2x daily for 2 weeks then 2 weeks off. This steriod, if not used correctly, can cause serious side effects in children such as stunted growth. I am very leery of this medicine but I am also scared it will get worse. I googled it (bad, bad idea) and some of the pictures are terrifying. I think I want to take her to pediatric dermatologist. There isn't one in my state but I found one about 3 hrs away. Has anyone dealt with this or know of any child that has it? I am so upset about this.
Re: Infantile Psoriasis
Why, thank you. I am totally freaking out. No one wants to hear that their beautiful LO has an incurable skin condition.
Yes, when it was bad I did. There were other creams as well that I was prescribed, but I can't remember all of them. Now I can pretty much control it with tar shampoo and Eucerin (the white, extremely thick cream that comes in the tub).
I'm the only one in my family as well that has it, although we are keeping an eye on Casey right now to see if he has it. He has patches on his back.
While it's not curable, it's definitely something you can control and for the most part not have too many major outbreaks. Even then though, it was never a big deal. The sun helps clear it up some as well.
Hi
I have psoriasis. I have had it since I was 12. I have had it on my scapl(still do)my ears, neck, face, body..you name it I was covered.
The medicated creams do help. Over time you figure out which ones work the best for certain people.
I am sorry your child has to go through this. I constantly watch my kids as psoriasis is hereditary and I got double wammied on both sides of my family.
For my scalp I use mineral oil. It works, it softens the scale and helps clear it up.
Good luck and (((hugs)))
I've had psoriasis since I was 9, so I can't relate to infantile, but I can tell you, treatments have gotten a lot better in the last 15 years! Although 'incurable' sounds super scary, it's totally treatable. Unlike the PPs, I never had luck with the topical creams, lotions and shampoos. My mom used to put them on me every night (it was like an hour routine) and sometimes I had to use a tar shampoo under a swimming cap. None of it helped. Also tried a UVB light box - didn't help. Tanning helped immensely, but that's so bad for you anyways!
However - psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder, just like rheumatoid arthritis. If you can find out what they use to treatment RA in babies (if it even exists?), it will clear up her psoriasis. If you treat it like an autoimmune disorder instead of a skin condition, it will be much easier. Therefore, I'd recommend seeing a rheumatologist instead of a dermatologist.
DH gives me a shot weekly and it's a godsend. It clears it right up.
Another thing - with psoriasis, be very watchful for any pain in her finger and toe joints. That is one of the first signs of psoriatic arthritis, which is also very treatable with the same medicine as RA. Examples are: Enbrel, Simponi, Remicade. However, your Dr. will help you figure out what a baby can have - those are medicines I've used as an adult.
I saw fancy dermatologists for years, but didn't really get any useful help until I saw a rheumatologist (which specialize in autoimmune disorders).
Sorry this is so long. Hope it helps! Just know - psoriasis actually isn't a big deal at all. Just a little itchy sometimes. Will not affect her quality of living whatsoever.
