Cloth Diapering

Why is the diaper stained?

So I'm always reading that people don't have problems with stains, that it all comes out. Had our first poopy diaper in cloth yesterday & I washed the diapers within an hour (I also rinsed immediately). Cold wash, then hot wash, double rinse. So why did the diaper stay stained? I really don't want this to happen every time, one b/c I'm not sure these are working for us, and I'm waiting for another diaper to come to try, if they work better, I want to sell what we have now. BTW, they are BG 3.0.

Re: Why is the diaper stained?

  • It might depend on the detergent.  Rockin Green is supposed to be great for stains.  I've just started using it so I can't say based on personal experience but that's based on comments I've seen from others.

  • You can also try sunning them outside.  The UV rays work like magic.

ETA:  If you want to avoid staining you can try using a fleece liner in the diaper.  That way most poop/pee will end up on the liner, unless it is EBF or runny poop.

  • Depends on what detergent you're using and your wash routine.

I've never had a BG stain.

Try putting it in the sun for an hour or two.

  • The last few days, our poopy diapers have suddenly started staining my inserts (sooo confused with that.)

That said, the sun is freakin' magic. It takes them right out (and I'm sunning them on a windowsill indoors.)

  • (When people say to sun them, make sure the diaper is freshly washed and still damp.)
  • I have always had stains out of the wash.  The key is drying them in the sun - gets most stains out.  Good luck!

  • When DS was still EBF and hadn't started solids yet his poop stained something awful especially natural fibers.  My natural fiber diapers hold onto stains way more than the synthetics.  I usually think when people say it all comes out that they aren't really referring to staining, as I think that is an inevitable part of CDs.  I think they mean it all washes out and the diapers are clean even with stains.  Or they could be referring to the fact that you can sun the stains out.  Personally if they smell clean, then they are clean, and I don't worry about staining until it gets really bad or I decide to sell the diaper.

  • You could also do a cold soak instead of cold wash before the hot wash. Let the machine fill up and agitate for a bit, then open the lid (if a toploader) and let soak for a little longer than the cycle allows if you can. When I had some issues with stains, I soaked for about an hour. I also add 1/2 cup of baking soda regularly to the cold cycle to fight stains. These two things combined seemed to do the trick.
  • Is your LO EBF? If so, thats why. We had a lot of stains when DD was EBF, but they'd usually come out after a couple washes. I didn't let it bother us because they'll go away. You can sun every so often if it bothers you, but it won't be permanent. I had less issue with our BG 3.0s and other synthetic fibers than I had with natural fibers like organic cotton.
