Since I started transitioning my youngest daughter on whole milk, I am thinking she
has a lactose intolerance - not an allergy as she's not having an
allergic reaction, but an intolerance. When she was born, she was on
Similac formula and never really had solid or semi-solid diapers (sorry
TMI) - it was way liquidy. The ped put her on Similac Sensitive at
around 3 months and the issue was resolved. Now, at a year, starting
whole milk, she is having daily blowouts and they stink horrendously
(more than normal, again, sorry for the tmi). Her mood is fine - she's
not crying like she's got an upset stomach or anything. She's been on
for about a week or so and it's not getting better. And then for the
last 2 nights she refused her bedtime bottle which is WEIRD for her.
Do I switch her to soy or could this be her body getting used to whole
milk? She's been eating cheese and yogurt for months without issue. I
have an appointment with the ped, but wanted to get your take on it.
How did you figure out your child's lactose intolerance? What did you
do? Did he or she grow out of it? I'll take any info you've got,
girls. TIA!
Re: Need help with potential lactose intolerance
I?d suspect lactose intolerance, too. It makes sense that she can have cheese and yogurt since they are cultured, so the lactose has been largely broken down. Try switching to lactose-free milk. The lactose is converted by enzymes. You should be able to find it at your regular grocery store. It will be a very good test - and a great solution if it is lactose-intolerance.
DD also had loose stools. They were kind of frothy, almost like mousse. It was obviously different. She didn?t seem uncomfortable at first, either, but one day she had a particularly large amount of milk and started rolling around and fussing, like she had an upset tummy and couldn?t get comfortable. A hard, swollen belly (because of gas) is also a sign, although DD didn?t have it. Actually, we suspect that DD has issues with cow milk other than lactose because she still had problems with lactose-free milk, taking her off yogurt (she won?t eat cheese) improved her situation further, and she seems to be okay with goat yogurt (although she?s only had two small servings).
DH is lactose-intolerant and did not grow out of it. My brother was as a child, but it decreased as he got older.
