Heart murmur

The babies had their 2 month check up on Monday. Lily was 10lbs 6oz and Max was 11lb 2oz, both are doing good.

But the doctor noticed that Max has a heart murmur. She said it sounded like it could be hole (I can't remember exactly where, or how she described it, I was too busy freaking out) She did say that if it is a hole it will probably grow together as he gets older. We are going to be taking him to Children's hospital for an echo, I was just wondering if anyone else had experience with heart murmurs?

Re: Heart murmur

  • My oldest DD had one at birth - they called it a ventricular septal defect I think. It was basically a small hole and yes, it grew back together by her 6 month checkup. Don't freak! They told me that typically even if it doesn't grow back together it doesn't cause them any issues in life later on.

  • Murmurs are extremely common and usually don't cause any problems. We moved and our new pediatrician heard a murmur during Audrey's exam when she was 7 months. The doctor wasn't worried about it and neither is my DH who's also a doctor. We are scheduling an echo just to make sure but the chances of it being serious is really slim. Try not to freak out. Your LO is most likely fine. Great weights at their appt! My teeny tiny girls were only 13lbs at 7 months!

  • Also, I recommend that you ask your pedi or childrens if they have this stuff called sweeties that you can have on hand for the echo.  It help keeps them calm because it takes about 15-20 minutes to do the echo.  You just give them a little on their paci or in a bottle and it makes all the difference in the world.

  • Yes, at our 1 month check up DD was diagnosed with one as well. We went to the pediatric cardiologist and they confirmed what our pedi thought, just a small hole between 3rd & 4th chamber that will close in time. We have an appt when she is a yr old to do another echo and ultrasound.
