Can I still work??

Hello ladies!!

I just recently found out I was pregnant (I'm 4 weeks). I work as a banquet server and sometimes have to lift some pretty heavy trays. Since I found out I'm expecting I've tried taking it easier and try to avoid lifting whenever possible, but I'm worried whenever I have to even lift a little bit.... I'm not ready to tell anyone yet, so it's unusual for me to ask someone else to lift.....SHOULD I tell my boss and ask for lighter parties, should I take a hiatus from work, or do you think I am ok with light lifting when I have to until I get farther along?

I am going to ask my doctor but I have to work soon and they're not open yet!

THANKS!

  • I carry around my 32 pound 2 year old everyday and I have had no issues. Talk to your doctor if you feel more comfortable but if you are already use to carrying the trays I don't think it would be an issue. It might later on when you are bigger. I know my balance was really off in my 7th month.

This. If there's no medical issues (cervix problems) then you're good to continue lifting what you're used to lifting. You will find, over time, that your body just can't do it any more- it's your body's way of telling you to dial it back. By about 6 months I was getting really clumsy, having terrible back aches and my balance was going--- it was my time to slow down.

Your work, on the other hand, may have issues with you lifting (not wanting to get sued) and people may have issues with their server being pregnant. You may find that you're pushed to lighter duties before you're ready anyways.

  • They say lifting-wise that if you coule handle it before your pregnancy, you can do it while your pregnant. That being said... I don't totally listen. At my job, I am required to do heavy lifting too. I do some moderate stuff, but not the huge stuff I used to. But, I still carry my 30 lb 3 yr old too with no issues!
  • Same as the ladies above.  I lift and carry my 30 lb three years old every day.  I asked the MW last week at my appointment and she said it was fine!

  • I am an event coordinator and help move banquet tables and chairs for work.  When I asked my doctor if this was ok she said that I could definitely continue to do it.  I say, as the pp have said, work until it gets uncomfortable.

Also, for all the time on your feet you may want to get compression tights.  I just picked them up and they are amazing, plus hopefully will keep away those nasty veins.
