Breastfeeding

switching from EP to EBF

So, I have pumped since DD was 2 weeks old due to latch issues.  I had inverted nipples and was using a shield but decided pumping was "easier" than nursing for 15 minutes each side and pumping to develop a supply.  I now think I see the error of my ways so to speak and have been thinking more and more about trying to nurse again.

Basically I am looking for some advice about how to proceed.  DD takes a bottle great and loves her pacifier so I'm not sure how much success I may have.  I am thinking about calling an LC tomorrow but just wondering what advice/ experiences you ladies may have had.

 Thanks in advance!

Re: switching from EP to EBF

  • Definitely call a good LC (as with any profession they aren't all equal).  Additionally, I would contact your local La Leche League (LLL) group and talk with one of the leaders or call the LLL 800#.  It can be done.  It also might not be possible at this point, but I read an article a few weeks ago about a mom that was able to get her LO to start EBF when she was somewhere around 9-10 weeks old.  So it is possible.  You might want to look into a SNS system as well. GL!

  • We went from EPing to EBFing at 7 weeks.  Have you tried to get her to latch at all?  I think seeing an LC would be a great first step.  I was lucky and he just latched and nursed the first time I tried.

  • Try taking a warm bath with her. Very young babies almost always latch in the tub.

  • DS1 was a preemie and couldn't nurse for awhile. I put him to breast before every feeding for about 10 min.  It was usually 10 min of me trying to get him to latch, but it eventually worked and I BFed him till 9 months.

Ditto pp's on seeing a LC.  She helped me a lot.

  • Definitely find a LC.  I just transitioned my baby from EP to EBF at 3.5 months old (1.5 months adjusted age).  We spent a few days covered in milk but it can be done!

  • I am in the middle of this transition right now, and it is going great! It definitely can be done.
