Tip the baker?

Would you tip an independent baker?  I've had a baker make DD's cake her big birthday bash on Sunday and she's also making her cake for tomorrow, which will be her actual birthday.  She doesn't have a storefront so it seems less like me going to a bakery to order a cake kind of deal.  Would that be considered a service?

If the person doesn't have a store front they shouldn't have that over head. Do they do the cake from their home? I'd say you wouldn't tip because they've already figured out their cost and how much they want to make from the sale when they quote a price. Is it a one person operation? if it's multiple people, I might tip, but a person doing it from their home, no unless i was extremely pleased and wanted to give them extra.

She uses a restaurant's kitchen and it's just her and her husband.  I have been pleased with the cake on Sunday as well as the cupcakes she made for a baby shower I hosted last month.

I make cakes on the side out of my home. I've only received a tip once, and I think it was because the cake was way more than the client was expecting (if I may toot my own horn). It honestly made my year that I received a tip from them... made me feel REALLY great about the job I did. I definitely don't expect tips, but I would say that if you are super happy with the job she's done for you, it would be a nice gesture. Not necessary, but always appreciated. HTH!
