Parenting after a Loss

Diaper size change question

Ok, I'm being a PW, but I couldn't put everything in one post.

The other thing that happened today is that when I put her in her swing (so, yes, to respond to nicobean's reply in my post about holding her after nursing, we do sometimes try to put her in the swing or bouncer after nursing) this afternoon, she slept for about 10 minutes.  It was long enough for me to heat up some lunch, but I never did get to eat it.  It was still sitting on the counter when DH woke up at 5:30 p.m.  I was in the kitchen, just around the corner from her, and she started screaming!  I couldn't imagine that she was hungry, as she JUST finished nursing 30 minutes before.

I picked her up, and found her to be soaked!  Her onesie was wet all up the back of it.  I've heard of poop going up the back of babies, but never pee.  But I can only presume that it WAS pee (baby pee doesn't smell like pee to me necessarily).  She was wearing a newborn size diaper.  I planned on finishing up using the NB diapers (she was 9 lbs, 12 ounces last week), and then switching to size 1.  I took her screaming upstairs to change her, and put on dry clothes.  I decided to use a size 1 diaper now, instead of waiting.

Is that what you would have done?  Did the pee go up her back because the diaper is too small?  She was just changed before the nursing before, so the rest of the diaper wasn't terribly wet.

Re: Diaper size change question

  • Sometimes if the diaper was put on too lose DD will leak out of her diaper.  Generally that's been a good indication that she needs to move up a size though.  I would keep using the NB's and if it happens again then go ahead and move up.  But, at night I would use the bigger size just to be on the safe side.

  • I wanna say when Jace was about 9 to 9.5lbs we switched to size 1 because of the same reason. It has really helped!

  • We just started with size 1 diapers this week - Avery was 10lbs 3 oz as of last week's appt. The newborns still fit, but they were getting soaked very quickly. She peed through them twice last week. The size 1s are a little gapey around the legs so we have to pull them up real high (which is very hard to do with her in the harness!!).

Wow... what a big girl!!!  :-)  Good job, Avery (and mama)!

I put away the newborn diapers.  I guess we'll use them for the next baby, someday (or I'll give them to my sister if she ever decides to have a baby).  Most of the size 1 diapers that I have on hand are the Huggies organics, which I didn't care for in the newborn size.  I probably won't like the size 1 either, so I'll use them, but will buy the regular Huggies tomorrow.

  • Good for you that you were able to put her down, and sorry you didn't actually get to eat your lunch (but at least she wasn't awake b/c of AR!).

I find that DS leaks through diapers way earlier than the weight guidelines for diapers. I just said to DH tonight that I think we'll need to start putting him in size 2s, not b/c he's growing all that fast but b/c today after 2 feedings, he had just about wet through his diaper. I have a feeling that we'll be moving up to size 2s at nighttime in the next 24 hours.

When we moved up to size 1s, DS was probably only 8 lbs and I swear they came up to his nipples, but it was the first night he STTN so I know we were on to something.

  • Oh yes DEF move up to the size 1's... Danny is 14lbs and he's in size 3's already. *sigh* they really do grow up too fast.
