Just to caution you, when you upload your photos there they do not save the full resolution file. You'd be better off just burning some DVDs of your photos for backup.
There are also loads of free online backup places - Adrive.com is one I know of. I think they give you 50GB for free.
I've been using it for 5 years now, never had a problem and it's pretty simple to use.
This! We have the full files and backed up at home - but I like that ever since I went digital mine are also stored here and I can print them anytime I want. My husband prints large photos for art shows and their color matching is great. They store the large file but you cannot "download" it again. They have crazy coupon pricing on retailmenot as well. I placed an order today to finish G's baby scrapbook and his "month "photos for the birthday party - and saved $10 off a $30 order...
I really like shutterfly. We have our files backed up here at home but they do great work! Every birthday I do a 12x12 birthday party album for Cruz. They come out so nice and he loves to go through them and look at them. I'm not into scrapbooking or messing around with pictures too much so its a great easy solution. I also do little photo books of vacations.
Keeping files online makes me really nervous unless the mission of the site is to provide safe data storage. If you're doing this for convenience only (easy to share and access) and you have them stored in two other places (your hard drive and an external harddrive/dvds in a firesafe box, etc.), then i say go for it. Otherwise, it's too risky.
In addition to the risk of loss of your photos by storing them on a site like this because they let you keep your photos there with the expectation that you are buying their products and can cease to offer that option, or any number of incidents could occur that would result in accidental loss, the resolution of the photos is very low so that they don't take up much storage space. If you ever wanted to print a picture bigger than 5x7 you'd be out of luck.

This isn't true, at least for Shutterfly. As pp said, you can't re-download your photos from them full size, which would suck if you lost them, but they keep them full-size, or at least big. They will tell you the print size your file can print up to, and it's always huge for my pics. I highly recommend them! Some of the sites (Snapfish for one) require you to buy at least one thing a year to keep your pictures stored there. Not like that is hard, but Shutterfly doesn't require it.
That's good, at least. I didn't realize that, but regardless what i meant was that if you wanted to retrieve your pictures and that was the only place you had them stored you wouldn't have high resolution pictures available to you in digital form (especially relevant when considering editing photos, though i don't know to what extent this can be accomplished using the shutterfly site), and would be able to print them from Shutterfly, only. Assuming Shutterfly stays in business and doesn't "lose" the pictures along the way they will be able to be printed in larger sizes.
