School-Aged Children

When would you tell them

We are taking DDs to Disney in about 3 weeks.  We have not told them about it yet.  DH wants to tell them soon and let the anticipation build but I'm leaning towards waiting until right before we go and surprising them with it.  I think they would be so excited when they hear.

They are in K and 2nd grade.  They've been to Disney before and we told them before the trip last time.

Not the most pressing issue, I know, but DH and I are up in the air about what to do.

Re: When would you tell them

  • Unless you want to be bugged for 3 weeks about I would wait until the last minute to tell them .

  • I think part of the fun of a vacation is the anticipation & planning.  I think I would tell them so you can plan a few things together as a family during the next few weeks.  It's not like you are 3 months or 6 months out...in that case I would wait.

  • I always wait until very close to the date. DS will drive me absolutely batty if I tell him too far in advance!
  • I have learned to not talk about any upcoming fun events with DD's as I will have to answer a million questions and get bugged every second with "when are we going?" and "why cant we go now?" questions. I only tell them now when I need their help with something or opinion with it.

  • It depends on the kids, we talked to ours kids about going to Maine for months.  Also I think the kids may need to mentally prepare, just like adults.

Will you be pulling them from school to go to WDW? If so, what is your district's policy regarding vacations taken during the school year? If you're doing this son the sly, as you would have to in many districts, you might want to surprise them rather than have the lie.

Yes, we are taking them out of school for 3 days.  We fully intend on telling their teachers before we leave.  We may not tell them we're going to Disney but we'll tell them we're going on vacation.

They have 2 days of teacher conferences so they're only missing 3 days. There is no official policy on vacations during the year.   Obviously it's not encouraged but there are no set policies against it.

  • i always make dd a countdown calender for disney and other trips. I just write the numbers on a stack of post it notes stuck to another paper saying where we are going. Each day she pulls one note off, she gets excited to countdown and always knows how long until we go. So there is no questions. You could even let the kids decorate it.
