Save your money. A changing table is a bulky piece of furniture. You may be able to put a changing pad on top of a dresser. Or, do as many people do and just use the floor. We used the changing pad for maybe about 2 months. Then she got too squirmy and now we use the floor. No worries about falling babies!
We have a table that converts to a dresser. My take on the floor thing - It's just easier for me to change him on the table, adn I actually find that him being on the pad cuts down on his squirminess. When I've changed him on the floor (after a bath, for example), I'm fighting him the entire time. But when he's on the pad - he'll fuss at first, then calm down and let me change him.

I don't think you need one, although we got one (it's a combo dresser/changing table). I think it's a bit much to register for, though (can be pricey, and obviously bulky... not like someone would buy it and bring it to a shower).
If you think you would like one but don't want to spend a ton of money, check Craig's List. We found a lot of inexpensive options on our local CL board.
We have a dresser that has a spot for a changing pad like this:
It works well for us, we didn't have room in his room for a dresser and a changing table.

We bought ourselves a long dresser (Ikea Hemnes 8 drawer) for our changing table. The dresser will stay in there and be DD's for a long time...
I know some people might say not to register for furniture, but if you want to buy it with the completion discount, go for it (or add it after your shower to buy yourself). It's really your choice.

Ours is a part of the crib. It will be a night stand later on. I think the brand is Delta. We bought it brand new on Craigslist for $150. I wanted to have the entire nursery done before the shower, but if you can't do that or don't want to do that, register for it so you can buy it later with a completion coupon.
I found a really nice dresser/changing table combo for a good price on Craigslist. It looks identical to the picture in the PP, but a different color wood. Then I registered for the changing pad and cover. I like this kind because it double as a dresser, which you'll need anyway.
We have serious space issues. We live in an iddy bitty 1 bedroom condo in a high rise building downtown, so the baby is rooming with us til we move. We opted to buy the changing table because we did not have the room for another dresser. It matches her crib and was about $75 on sale. Personally, I love it and think it was worth every dollar spent. I had an emergency C-Section, and having to bend over to change her would have been a nightmare.

Waste of space and money. Just get a contoured changing pad for the top of the dresser.

This is what we did for the exact reasons.
