NT Scan...

How many of you are declining the NT Scan? For our first child we discussed it with my Dr and decided not to. I'm thinking we won't again this time. Anyone in the same boat?

Re: NT Scan...

  • If it is covered by insurance, I see no reason not to do it, and we would pay OOP if we had to.

I had no reason to think we would find any problems with our first pregnancy, and we did. So I think this is an important scan.

  • I had it done with ds and will be having it done this time around as well.
  • I am having this done this friday.

  • I didn't with DS because it wouldn't change any decisions we made about the baby.  This time I am going to have it done (tomorrow actually) but just because I want to see the baby again.

  • I can't wait... I have mine in two weeks.  It is just another way to see the baby, and it is covered by insurance!

  • We did it with #1 and we will do it with #2. If something were wrong I would want to know so we can prepare for it and be ready when the baby gets here. For me, finding out my child is ill on the day he/she is born is not a memory I want to have- I'd rather know ahead of time.

  • I'm getting mine done on Thursday.  Our insurance covers it but we were willing to pay for it out of pocket if they didn't.  It's an important scan/test for us.

  • They've been doing it as a standard practice in the UK since the early 80's.  I had mine yesterday.  While I knew there was nothing to worry about, it was such an overwhelming relief to KNOW that everything is ok.  They were even able to drop my 'risk' from 1:275 to 1:1250 for Down's and even greater for the other two chromosomal abnormalities.  That's certainty as far as I'm concerned, and it was worth it to not have to make a decision about amnio or CVS.

Plus, we got to see the baby in great detail, and that was awesome!!!

  • I did it for both my boys' and will be doing it again for baby #3.  My insurance covers it and it's piece of mind an another u/s to see baby, I say why not?
  • after talking to the nurse practitioner, i had decided to not have it done. she asked me if it would change the result of the pregnancy, i said no, that was it.

but at my next appt i talked to my dr and she said that it can not only provide peace of mind, but, if there is something wrong, it will give us time to prepare (mentally and logistically). she said it's completely our decision, but she wanted to make sure we looked at it from all sides. she also said a lot of women do it for the extra u/s which is definitely a perk for us since my husband wasn't at the first u/s. :) so, ours is scheduled for monday!

  • We didn't do the testing with our first, and we aren't doing it this time, either. I see both sides (doing the test vs. not doing it), and it's probably more in line w/ my personality to take every single test offered for peace of mind or just to be prepared. We just feel more comfortable not taking them at this point.
  • I didn't have one with DD because my OB didn't routinely order them.  This time, I have a new OB who routinely orders them, so mine is scheduled for Thursday.  I don't think it would change my mind on continuing the pregnancy if something was seen at the u/s, but I would like to have time to get prepared.
  • We are definitely having the scan done. To my way of thinking, this is a test that is covered by insurance and non-invasive, why wouldn't you have it done? There's nothing wrong with having a little extra information about your baby.

If it wouldn't change the outcome of the pregnancy for you, at the very least you'd know that something was wrong and would have the next 6 months to educate yourself on your baby's condition and treatment options. There's nothing wrong with being well-prepared if you're going to bring a life into the world that will need some extra care.

And if your baby is perfectly fine, then hurray for the added peace of mind! Pregnancy is full of enough worries, if there's an easy, non-invasive way to make sure that baby is developing as s/he should, I really don't see the downside.
