Baby Names

Addison vs Allison...

We are having a baby girl, due the day after Christmas.

I love the name Addison (I realize that it's traditionally a boys name, but that doesn't bother me).

DH thinks Allison sounds "sweeter", but he would love either one.

So now I can't decided, I keep going back and forth between the two, I would love some input! ?:)

The middle name we have chosen is Jayne (family spelling).

our runner-up names were:

Lorelei (pronounced Lora-lie)

Collins

Elizabeth

Ryan?

Laura ?

Brooke

  • My all time favorite name is Allison, so that is my vote. I think it has more staying power and will grow up better than Addison.

I think Addison is overplayed and trendy and I still think it is better for a boy.

  • Allison Elizabeth gets my vote.

Addison is super trendy and I prefer the nickname Allie to Addie... I also don't like either name with Jayne because of the A.J. nickname possibility.

  • Addison is just too trendy for my taste.  I'd pick Allison out of those two.  I really like Allison Jayne.

I would rank your runner ups:  Brooke, Lorelei, Laura, and Elizabeth.

Collins and Ryan are boy names, IMO.

  • Allison. Addison is super trendy

  • Between the top 2, I strongly prefer Allison. Lovely spelling too. Addison makes me think of a disease. Plus it is very trendy and the nn "Addy" makes me want to gag.

For you runner ups, I like Elizabeth and Laura!

  • Many of your other names are very classic (I'm purposely ignoring Collins and Ryan). Addison is very trendy, IMO. I'd go with Allison.

This. Also, think if you will end up shortening the name to a nn. Do you like Ally or Addy better? BTW, I hate Ryan for a girl and Collins is just a terrible first name for anyone.

  • I'm normally a lurker- but I have to say- Allison! My name is Alison (Lee) and I've always loved my name! Addison is cute but too trendy in my opinion. I prefer Laura out of all of your middle name choices :-)

     Best of luck! :-)

  • Though I prefer the NN Allie to Addy, I think Allison sounds more dated than Addison. However, Addison was the most popular girls' name in my state last year, and I know a lot of babies named Addison, so I'm kind of over the name.

I think Lorelei and Elizabeth are much prettier names. I also LOVE Ryan as a girl's name. Laura and Brooke are just dated to me, and Collins presents all sorts of problems when you really start thinking about using it day to day ("This is Collins's toy;"). Ryan Jayne or Elizabeth Jayne would get my vote.

But since you were asking about Addison and Allison, I'd say Addison by a nose.

  • I LOVE Allison.  It was our top name choice if we were having a second girl.

I'm not a fan of Addison.  Both because it sounds masculine and because of Addison's Disease.

  • I like Laura Jayne. I think it sounds the best with your mn choice, plus it's a classic! Elizabeth Jayne is OK, too. I'm not a fan of any other ones (I like the name Brooke, but I don't like it with Jayne).

  • Allison by a mile! Addison is way overdone these days.

I really like Lorelei and Laura from your runners-up list though.

Agree with this, too. And also agree with pp who said that Addison will make a lot of people think of Addison's Disease. Not a pleasant association.

  • My vote goes to Allison, although both names were originally boys names.. Addison is SO trendy right now, if you REALLLY REALLY like the sound of it I would opt for Madison, also a boys name, also popular (as a girls name)

I do love the middle name Jayne

    Allison Jayne is beautiful!

And nobody should be naming their daughter Collins.  Can you imagine going through life being asked "As in Tom??" and "Collie, like the dog?"

  • We went through this when naming DD, and ultimately chose Allison because I thought it sounded a little more feminine, and the popularity of Addison had just gotten out of control.

Her name is Allison Nicole, and we call her Allie.  I love it and we get compliments on her name often.

    Allie ~ 01/26/09 ~ 7 lbs, 9 oz ~ 20.75 in. & Amelia ~ 03/16/11 ~ 8 lbs, 1 oz ~ 21 in.

  • 100% Allison. Beautiful and classic name. Addison is too trendy for my taste and will sound dated before too long.

Addison is the next AD name in the line of Madeline/Madison etc. I think it will have a date stamp on it, whereas Allison as survived a few decades and still seems to shine for people.

  • I like Allison!

Reasons: It's a name she can grow with, I like the possible nickname Allie, I like Allison paired with Jayne better.

As far as runner up middle names I like Elizabeth.

    Good luck!!!! :)

  • I'm obviously biased, but Allison by a mile. Addison is a terrible name. It's a disease, it doens't have a pretty nickname (Addy? Dis? Dizzy?) whereas Allison has Alice, Allie, Lissy... and it's terribly trendy. It's this decade's Tiffany. Allison isn't dated -- it's classic. I know Allisons my age, as well as Allisons who are 50 and Allisons who are 6.
  • Allison because that's my name
  • If I could only convince DH of naming our second daughter Allison. I ADORE that name. Addison is waaaaay too trendy.

This. I think Allison is much "sweeter" as your DH suggests.

  • Allison (although I prefer it spelled Alison as that is my name).  Much more timeless and less trendy than Addison.
  • I like Allison.  It might help that my name is Alison.  Also my mom's name is Jayne spelled the same way.  Allison Jayne would be a great name if you ask me :)
