Cloth Diapering

BumGenius Prep Question

I have 24 brand-new BG4.0s - I know I need to wash them multiple times to get out the chemicals/make them absorbent, but does this apply to the inserts as well as the covers? I mean, the covers are not the absorbent part, so 1-2 washes to get the chemicals out should be adequate, right? So long as I wash 'n' dry the heck out of the inserts?

Re: BumGenius Prep Question

  • you only need to wash them once (all parts). No multiple washes needed.
  • Diapers with synthetic materials only need to be washed once for preparation.  The diapers should also be placed in the dryer after the first wash to help seal the PUL.  After that you can line dry if you choose.

Ditto this. We line dry the shells every time (after the first time) and only put the inserts in the dryer since it it less wear and tear on the dipes and our BGs line dry really fast.

  • After the first dryer drying, I line dry the pockets and the inserts to get out stains.
  • I didn't know you should dry them the first time, I didn't yesterday, oops. And here is a stupid question...what is PUL? I'm new to this. I guess it will be fine if I dry them next time?
