Cloth Diapering

Any advice/reviews on G diapers?

I am interested in giving this a shot, as is a friend of mine whose due super close to me. I was looking up reviews online and it seems like an excellent plan, but wanted to know if anyone here has ever tried them? It can be expensive to start up, so I'd like to know all the ups and downs before getting started...

Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks ladies!

Re: Any advice/reviews on G diapers?

  • This question gets posted a lot so I'd scroll back a bit.

I give gDiapers the No FWIW.  There's lots better diapers out there.

  • No worries.  A lot of people ask about g's because they are the most commonly available, but they aren't the best IMO.  Look into a diaper trial like the one on Jillian's Drawers to see what kind of CDs you like.  If you want to use a hybrid system like gDiapers, you can also check out Grovia or Flip.

  • DH and I didnt know there were other systems like the gDiaper system before we invested in the newborn starter set so we are going to try them and see how it goes before further investment. :( But I am excited to try it wither way... I have a few other AOI's and some prefolds and what not but mostly the little g's there is a gal with a blog who commonly answers on here with a link in her siggy if I can find it I will post it for you :D

  • We tried gDiapers for the first few months.  They were ok, but not great.  We had some trouble with them leaking urine.  In their defense, they do say that they fit babies better if they have a little chub on their legs and LO has skinny chicken legs.  We switched to the Flip diapers about a month ago and so far so good.  However, I don't think the Flips would have fit right away even though they say they're good down to 8lbs. We did use the tinyG's right away after coming home from the hospital.  They are designed more like the Flip and worked great for the first few weeks until he outgrew them.
  • I didn't care for the gdiapers. They are meant to breathe to prevent rash, so the outer cover was always damp. In turn, my LOs clothes were always damp. I have a 2 pack of smalls I am trying to get rid of currently. We are using the flips right now and I have no complaints. It's the same concept just a little different.

  • We really like G's.    For Dominic, tinyg's were the only diaper to hold in his poop and still is (he's doesn't quite fit the size small, so he's still in his tinyg's right now - he's close to 9lbs.).  We don't have many leak issues - poop NEVER gets on the cover.    I LOVE the trim fit, and quite honestly, I probably wouldn't have stuck with cloth diapering with bulkier diapers.....    I LOVE that they do up in the back.  And, I like that they are sized.....

They do get bad reviews here, but it all comes down to preferences.    We've tried other cloth diapers, but we prefer g's.     We also mainly use gcloth - I've just recently tried out their disposable inserts because Natalie always reacts badly to other disposable's.    We still use disposables for weekends away, etc......   Anyway, their disposable inserts work pretty good for her and the best part is she doesn't get diaper rash from them!    I haven't been brave enough to flush them, so compost or garbage it is.

A diaper trial may be a good idea, so you can really get a feel for what you like and you could maybe get a small starter pack of g's (with cloth) to try out as well.... It can be hard to know what you like until you try the options.    Anyway, GL with it all - I love cloth diapering - it gives me another excuse to shop ;P

eta:  We also use them for night --- we just double up the inserts and Natalie is yet to leak through at night.   The only time we have leaks is when the inserts need to be stripped.

We have been really happy with gdiapers as well - I agree, it comes down to preference & what fits your LO best.  We've never had issues with leaks, and DD is a heavy wetter at night.  I layer one cloth over one disposable insert and she's dry all night.  We mostly use the disposable inserts and have had no issues with flushing them - you just have to make sure you break them up pretty good with the swish stick they provide.  Also, I don't think you can flush if you're on septic, so you'd want to be aware of that. GL!

  • we really like gdiapers too. she had to be in disposables for a while due to her size, but once she fit into her g's we were so happy. she got terrible diaper rash with disposables and nothing since the cloth. i have only had a leak 3-5 times since she has worn them and i'm possitive that it was because the diaper was not put on tight enough or correctly, or that she went to long without a change. poop has never gotten through. as a PP said, at night we just double up. we put two cloth inserts in and she is fine. she sleeps 10-12 hours a night.

i also agree with PP that you should do a trial. there are great sites out there that offer multiple brands to try. good luck!

  • I also love g's, never have any blowout problems, no leaking problems (unless his boy bits are pointing up out of the liner instead of down... lol) Cole wore tiny's for about 2 weeks, until his cord fell off, moved to smalls, will probably be in the smalls another couple of weeks, and then he'll be in mediums for a while...

I love the fit, really easy, and I like the system itself - people compare them to GroVias and to Flips, but they're different in that the liner is not part of the pant.. GroVias have gussets, so just like disposables, they can have blowouts. and Flips only have a similar elastic on the pant, and only on part..

with g's, the liner can get dirty, but it contains the poo.. people think it's tough to change all the pieces all the time, but realistically, you change out a liner about 1-3 times a day - more for a newborn, but within a month or two, you're really not changing out liners often. with wet diapers, you just let them air out for a bit, and wash with the regular laundry...
