finding out the gender

I was just wondering how far along you have to be before you can find out the gender. I always thought it was at 20 weeks but I have a friend who found out she's having a boy and she found out at 16/17 weeks. I'm not trying to rain on her parade or anything, I'm just a little confused.

Re: finding out the gender

  • my office does it between 18-22 weeks.  But Katy's office is making her wait until 25wks.  Some girls on the Jan'11 board went for a separate appointment somewhere and found out as early as 15-16wks.   It might just be based on the typical practice of the office.  But they do a lot of other measurements at the appointment too.
  • 20 weeks is when the anatomy ultrasound usually is but it is possible to find out sooner.  If you have an amnio you will find out the gender then, and I think they can see it on ultrasound starting around 16w or so.

  • I found out at 18 weeks because we sweet talked the U/S tech to take us earlier  because we live so far away and we were already there for a routine OB appt.  But our appt was for 20 weeks.

Yeah, as of right now, I have to wait until 25 weeks. As the girls said though, it's up to the practice.  Typically an anatomy scan of all of the organs is done between 18 and 22 weeks, the sex can usually be determined during that scan.  It can be done a few weeks earlier using ultrasound.  The "norm" is 18 - 22 weeks, but, physically, it CAN be done earlier.  The "early" tests though, a lot of people say to not trust it 100%.  Although, I guess you don't really know with 100% certainty until the baby is born anyway.

  • I think you can find out as early as 14 weeks but there's a certain amount of error involved.  There's a blogger, who's pretty popular but of course I can't remember her name now, who paid extra to find out at 15 weeks what she was having, was told girl, and then at 25 weeks during a follow-up ultrasound found out it was a boy.  During those 11 weeks she'd bought a bunch of girl stuff already and was PISSED!  Especially since she'd paid a lot of money to have it done early.  So personally, if I were to find out, I'd wait until 20 weeks, just to be safe.
  • I found out at 16 weeks, but that is because I was high risk and I had ultrasounds every 3 weeks.....but IF it is a boy you can find out as early as 13 weeks if you have an ultrasound and he shows the goods of course...However they will never tell you for sure you are having a girl at 13 weeks...because as we know that could change..but a boy never does!!
  • I agree that it really depends on the practice. I went for my last doctor's appt. about 5 weeks ago and the nurse acted ticked off that I hadn't already had my anatomy scan done. I told her that the doctor had told me at the previous appt. that she would have it set up when I came in next time. I'm glad I even got it pushed back a week, so I was over 20 weeks, when we found out.
  • At my practice they like you wait until the 20 week mark for the u/s which is when they'll tell you the gender.  I had mine at 19w3d since we were going out of town and the u/s tech and doctor determined the gender without telling us.

My friend who is PG now wanted to find out the sex so her doctor tried to see on an u/s at 17 weeks, but he couldn't tell so she had to wait for her anatomy scan a few weeks later.

  • Ahhh ok it all makes sense now. Thanks ladies!
