Baby Names

Double Names

You don't hear of new babies with double names as often anymore. However I wouldn't think twice about considering a double name for one of my children as I grew up with a lot of people with double names.

These are some of my childhood friends: Mary Grace, Anna Catherine, Mary Joe, Mary Beth, Sarah Beth, Tara Mae, Kara Beth, Sally Kay, MaryLei, Joe Anne, Calley Jo, John David, John Dale, Clint Ryan, and David Ray

What do you think of when you hear a double name?

  • Truthfully, I think total Southern Hick...sorry!

    Oh yeah, GO GATORS!

  • I think it is a quintessentially Southern naming style-- though not necessarily associated with "hicks," as the PP suggested. I actually like doubled first names, but it has been brought up here before and of those who didn't think of rednecks, the others seemed to think they were pretentious.

  • My DD is named Sadie and her middle name is Belle. We just call her Sadie, but a lot of our "southern" family members call her "Sadie Belle." It doesn't bother me at all, but I wouldn't give her both names as a first name. I think it's a bit much.
  • While I think Southern for the names Bobby-Jo etc., I think names such as Sue Ellen sound pretentious and quite old fashioned.
  • I definately think Southern, but I don't think that's a bad thing.  Honestly though, I grew up in the south & I don't remember any of my friends having double names.  Just out of curiosity, where in FL are you from? (I grew up in the panhandle.)

    I agree!

  • I think southern but in a good/classy way.  I love double names.  Mary Nell, Mary Winslow and Anne Everett (all family names) were all on our shortlist.  I think any name sounds better with Mary or Anne in front of it--maybe even Mary Nevaeh!  Kidding.

I've known girls, my age on down to babies with the following double names:

    Mary Elizabeth

    Mary Margaret

    Margaret Anne

    Mary Haskins

    Mary Bruce

    Mary Lib

    Mary Brent

    Mary Candace

    Anna Vaughan

    Anna Bennett

    Anna Brooks

    Anne Wells

    Anne Katherine

    Emma Claire

    Emma Mills

    Mary Stuart

    Mary Morgan

And tons more.  Double names are big in my region.

  • It's not really my style, but I don't hate it.  I have a friend named Jennifer May.  May is her last name.  Every one calls her Jenny May.  I thought that was her first name for the longest time.
