Cloth Diapering

Washing issue

So, I have been CDing for almost 4 months now. Recently (like about a month or so ago) switched to RnG detergent, which I love.

My usual wash routine is to do a soak in warm with oxy every second or third time, then do a warm/cold wash with 3 Tbsp. RnG and then two rinses (every time).

Also, my son is EBF

The last two times I have done the wash only without the soak, I have noticed there is still poop residue in the wrinkles of the fabric from the elastic.

I am now just doing a soak with the whole load in oxy that I just washed. Should I rewash after or just do a rinse? What am I doing wrong that this has happened? Am I not using enough detergent? SHould I be soaking every time? I have never noticed this before and I don't understand why it is suddenly happening.

Re: Washing issue

  • I have never used RnG or Oxy with my diapers, but I know most of the wash routines I see have a cold rinse and/or soak first, then a hot wash with detergent.  I believe that first initial rinse is to rinse out all of the poop & pee, then wash them clean, then an extra rinse or 2 at the end to make sure all of the detergent is out.  So if you are skipping the initial rinse/soak and just doing one wash that might be why you still have some poop?

As for the soak in oxy you are doing now, I would rewash afterwards, it may not be necessary, but if it were me I would do it just to make sure they get clean.

Oh yeah, as PP said, you'll need to do a cold rinse first.  My washer has the option of 2 rinses, so I set it to that, let it run, then run a hot/cold wash load with RnG.

  • is a rinse better than a soak? and cold vs. warm?
  • Do you have an HE washer?  If so, they use so little water that it's hard to get the diapers clean.  I do two cycles of rinse with no spin just to get the diapers saturated with water and then a heavy duty hot cycle to clean them. I also rinse the BM poop off the diapers in the sink before laundering even though I know you don't necessarily have to.  It's been working much better for me.

  • no, i just have a standard washer.
  • I'm not sure one is better than the other, really, but running them through a rinse cycle is faster.  I think the agitation and spin...etc from a rinse would "flush" away mess more than just sitting in water.
  • I just do a cold rinse, followed by a hotwash/cold rinse (with detergent). Thats it. We've never had a problem.
