1. Pediatrician
2. Daycare/in-home (or are you a SAHM)
I have a close friend whom I've told we've started the adoption process...and she said that I should immediately be researching these 2 things. So, I wanted to see what you ladies thought. I know there is no guarantee to when we'll be matched with a BM...but I guess what I'm trying to figure out is do I really need to do this now? Our home study isn't completed just yet.
Thanks!
Re: When did you start researching for...
1. We go to a family practice, so it was a given that DD would go there. No reearch necessary.
2. I'm a SAHM. I went back to work for a month, and daycare was a last-minute search. Fortunately a DC center contracts with DH's work, so it was a pretty easy decision.
IMO it wouldn't hurt to look at your options. You'll want to be comfortable with a pedi, so if you already have one in mind you can go to him/her straight after a match. And in our case we were required to take DD to a dr 48 hours after her hospital release, so it was nice to have that lined up. And it's always a good idea to know what kind of daycare you want and how much it's expected to cost so you can plan for it.
Long answer longer, I'd start looking but not be freaking out about it.
Hi Rach!
Unfortunately, we don't have much of a choice when it comes to medical, we have Kaiser, which I keep telling DH WILL change! I am always looking at Day Care centers since I am a pediatric SLP and I assess 3-5 year olds in their "natural environment" which is preschool/day care. I have a mental list of ones that I like and ones that I love! I will really begin to look at day care once the baby is home with us.
1- I don't know...
2- I think its important you have a general idea what you want- do you want in-home, group, center, ect... and then know how to find what you want when the time comes. (have the contact info for the lisencing agency. here its called Child Care Resource and Referal). Then do some asking around- how do places do it in your area- are there waiting lists, does it take a long time to get a slot, ect.
Also knowing how much time off you have after the adoption would be helpful- if you'll have to pull this all together quickly that would be different than if you have several months to figure things out.
HTH!
1) I go to a family practice, but I did talk to a few different pedis... it was really helpful to have a few different opinions when we were looking at some situations with drug exposure. Ultimately, we decided to take Luke to my dr. Love him.
2) I'm a WAHM, I do daycare
Coming from that perspective, I would say you should just get an idea of what you are looking for (ie: in home, center, etc...) and when you get matched, you can start the interview process. If there is a center you really love with a long waiting list, I would call them and explain your situation and get on the list. You can't be too careful about your daycare.
Good luck!
We just finished our paperwork, so I am going to start looking at pedis now.
And then daycares, even though I wish I didn't have to so I could stay home. But adoption=me having to go back to work.
I spoke with our family Dr. when we had to do the physicals for the adoption and we decided to take DD there since that is were we all go.
I would call around and get on waiting list for daycare if you are going to be needing them. I was shocked that so many around here had waiting list for a 2 year old. I put DD on the list about 1 year before she came home and got on call about two months before she was here. We went to visit with DD about 1 month before she started. Cost is something else that you might want to get a feel for. I pay for DD almost as much as I paid for DS & DD both.
