She has been signing what I think to be milk in the last few weeks. Sometimes I think she is just excited to haev mastered moving her fingers like that so I don't know if she is saying milke or waving ha ha. She knows what it means though because if I sign it she opens her mouth like a bird.
12 months but he only started it then at DC. He didn't go until then. He was only in for four days and signed milk at the grocery store. I was talking to him while shopping and he signed it when I put the carton in the buggy.
That's awesome that your kids are signing that young!
I really want to start this with DD. We made up our own stuff like when she is hungry she puts her hand to her mouth like she wants food put in it, but Im very interested in actually learning sign. Where do you start??

DS has been signing milk since about 6 months, and we believe he has attempted cat, mom and dad since then. I say attempted, because he doesn't quite have the positioning down (cat is done higher on his forehead, dad on the side of his face). I think it is about a year that they are supposed to start signing more regularly and be more skilled at it.

There are tons of books out there that you can pick up. Check at your local library and see if they have any selections available for you. You could use any ASL book, but the baby sign language books actually have reccomendations for what signs to start using and when to start using them. The sign that you "made up" sounds like the actual sign for food. A lot of sign language is pretty common sense like that.

check out the signing time series - it's awesome. (signingtime.com)
as for Bunny - he signs milk unreliably, but reacts reliably when i offer "change diaper," "want milk," or "sleep time" depending on what's ailing him.
According to my brain book, there's a huge synapse boost in the 8-12 month stretch and that's when you'll start seeing reliable signs and hearing reliable words.
just encourage consistency and you'll be good!

eb is 6 months old and hasn`t yet, but i`m really hoping she starts soon i`m not using babysign though; i`m working on my master`s in interpreting for the Deaf, so i sign everything to her all the time. i have Deaf friends whose babies signed as early as 3 months old!
