Houston Babies

little one has a cold

My DH had a cold last week (soar throat/cough/ear ache/runny nose) and gave it to me and DD. She seems to be fine - not fussy at all, however I can tell she is congested from her cries, etc.

A few friends and family members suggested that I get a humidifier for my DD. Does anyone in Houston actually have a humidifer? If so, does it help? What kind of humidifier is better - cool or heat? brand suggestions.

Also - she was STTN up until she sounded congested..I am relating this to the fact that her throat and ear is hurting and her body is wanting fluids for her immune system to work - let me know if I am totally wrong.

Re: little one has a cold

  • A lot of us have them, they're especially useful in the winter when the heating system dries out the air, but for the time being you could take her into the bathroom and steam it up really good with a hot shower.

I think most humidifiers are cool mist these days for safety reasons. Target sells a few kinds...some that look like animals and some by vicks that don't and are about $5 cheaper. The vicks ones say whether they're good for congestion or not, so if you go that route get one that is.

Use saline and flush/suck her nose out as much as possible.

  • We have a Cool Mist Vicks one.  You can look for reviews online - I think most of them probably are pretty similar.

I also agree with the nose suction.  I If you think it's mostly nasal and not lung congestion, another thing you can do (it's going to sound weird), but cover her mouth with your mouth (as if you were going to do CPR) and blow gently into her mouth.  (it's kind of like you blowing her nose for her)  Hopefully, that will get some of the gunk out of her nose - I know it sounds weird, but it works in a pinch.

  • thanks ladies. Will give the steaming up the bathroom and sailine drops a try. The mouth-to-mouth I will probably wait since I still have a cold. =)

    Definitely helpful. thanks again.

  • I actually have both a cold and a hot air humidifier. I know that the hot air humidifier is a safety hazard but I think it works better when anyone at home, including DD, has a runny nose. It warms and humidifies the air, and you can add aromatherapy stuff to the water.

We all have the same thing...Mr. K brought it home to mommy and daddy.  Ugh! When at the doctor she suggested the hot shower and saline stuff. The hot shower breaks it all up and then sucking it out helps! We are now at the booger stage so we have to use the saline drops to break it all up.  Some of his has been alergies as well.

    Hope she feels better soon!
