TTC After a Loss

Prolactin Levels

I may be obsessing about this but were any of you diagnosed with elevated prolactin levels before your BFP?  My DR called to tell me that my bloodwork came back with elevated prolactin levels and I needed to come in to have it retested.  The day I went back in was the day I got my BFP via the DR's urine test.

I need to add that there is NO WAY that I was pregnant when they took my blood sample the first time because DH and I did not BD until the following weekend.  I am really concerned that this could have caused my m/c and DH and I want to start TTC again immediately but I don't want to go through this again.

I would just ask my DR but I am going in on Monday to have hCG levels checked (they were at 19 Wednesday) and I will only see the lab tech.  After this I am going out of town for a week.  I know that if I ask the lab tech to test my prolactin she won't (they don't like patients playing DR, which I understand...) and she won't be able to give me any answers.  So if any of you have experience or knowledge in this area, I would really appreciate your input.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Prolactin Levels

  • In high school, I had high prolactin levels that the doctor attributed to the pill.  It was making my body think I was pregnant (which I was not) and I produced a little bit of milk -- strange.  They checked my pituatary (sp?) gland and it was okay.  I switched to a lower estrogen pill and it lowered my prolactin level.  Are you taking any meds?  I really don't think it could possibly cause a m/c b/c high levels are associated with pregnancy, so I would think having it high would only support the pregnancy.

  • Hi- I've never posted before, but know a ton about this and didn't want to not share. Anyhow, I have a small tumor that produces prolactin (it's benign and pretty common) so my levels have been very high my whole life. It shouldn't have anything to do with the m/c (according to my neuroendocronologist), but can make it hard to get pregnant depending on how high it is. I've been on bromochriptine to keep my levels in check since ttc, but went off as soon as I got my bfp. I'm happy to talk more about this if you want, shoot me a PM if you'd like to know more. Good luck! I'll go post an intro now...

  • Just as the poster above, I have a small pituitary tumor as well that causes my prolactin level to be high. I take bromocriptine everyday and when I get a BFP, I will stop taking it. When I was pregnant this spring, I asked my doctor about this very same issue because I was worried that once I quit taking the meds for my prolactin level, they would go back up and not be good for the pregnancy. She told me that my prolactin level should increase during pregnancy and that everything would be just fine.
  • Thanks for sharing, this makes me feel a lot better.  I know that my m/c is not because of anything that I did but I want to do everything I can to avoid it happening again!
