TTC After a Loss

Has anyone else NEVER had a positive OPK?

I have now been POAS with OPK's for 3 months now. I start as soon as AF stops (she normally is here for 5 days). And I test twice (if not more) a day every single day until AF shows back up (normally prompted by progesterone)

I have not, in all that time, had a positive OPK - not even a possibly positive OPK. There is the control line...and then NOTHING on the test line. If I get any type of test line at all it is very light and no where near positive.

I have even tried some digitals (the few times that I got a light line) and they always were negative.

Does anyone else have this problem?

  • So, I'm confused...are you ovulating and you're just not getting a +OPK? If this is the case, it could juts be that you're missing the surge.

The fact that you mentioned your AF is prompted by progesterone...does this mean that in order to get your period to come, each time you take progesterone? If this is indeed the case, I would say that it would be normal to not get a +OPK, since you are not ovulating. Maybe speak to an OBGYN/RE to discuss how to make your body ovulate?

  • Yes I always have to stimulate AF through the use of progesterone. I'm not sure if I'm ovulating because I never get a positive OPK. I have PCOS so I think there is a distinct possibility that I'm not ovulating.

I tried to talk to my OB/GYN about this but she said that since I "obviously ovulated once" I don't have a "fertility" problem, and because I "only had 1 m/c" I don't have a m/c problem. She say's I need to be trying for a year (starting with first AF after m/c)...so not counting the 9 months I was ttc prior to the first BFP, she can't classify me as having a "fertility" problem. Until I receive that classification my insurance won't cover treatment, and won't cover anything done by an RE until I get a referral from my primary OB/GYN - which she won't do of course until after I've been classified as having a fertility problem and have attempted "normal" treatment with her. (normal treatment includes clomid & iui)

  • Today was the first time I ever got a positive, but I think I was missing the surge. I always used FMU, and when I was using them was years ago with ex-h so I might have been off on my timing then too. Ironically, this time I was testing in the afternoon and kept getting negatives, and finally got a positive with FMU today (also using a digital).

  • I've never gotten a positive, even the cycle I conceived. I have always had a clear thermal shift to indicate that I O'd though. I haven't been as good at taking them recently since we're TTA but I don't put much stock in them since I know I O'd when I got pregnant and the OPKs said otherwise.

  • I've been trying to chart - but tracking CM honestly grosses me out (sorry I know I should get over it but I just can't) so I've been temping, but my temps are all over the place (I blame it on DH's restless sleep) I'm a light sleeper so every time he moves..which he does A LOT..I wake up.

  • Also I originally was just testing with FMU (because it's easier) but now I do FMU and then test again after work around 5:30 p.m. every day. (sometimes I'll also do one more right before bed for the fun of peeing on things).

  • Are you charting temps?  At what point are you starting progesterone?

  • Yes I chart temps - I recently registered for FF and will start using that with the next cycle (paper tracking was getting old).

I start progesterone at 28 days. Which triggers AF at 34 days. I could start progesterone sooner but always hold out hope for a BFP until day 28. So I end up having a long cycle.

Whoa...say wha?? That's totally redonkulous. I would seek the opinion of another OBGYN. Just the PCOS classification alone (not the mention the huge red glaring flag that is no AF unless progesterone is taken) should be enough to send you to an RE.

I would so find a new OB/GYN.  That has to be so frustrating!

  • PCOS can also always give you false positives on an OPK too.

But I was told I don't ovulate on my own thats why I get maybe 2 periods a year. I think going thru birth kick started my overies as  finally ovulated last month.. a first for me not promoted by IF drugs or a period by provera.

I would find a new doctor.
