How common is this? Rash from Amoxicillin

DD started on amox on tuesday then thursday night I saw a pick blotchy rash all over her body. We went into the pedi and he switched us to a different med.  But we'd also used a new kind of soap on DD on wed....so it could have been either the med or the soap.

However I'm ready to blame the med b/c I get a rash the same as DDs when I use Amoxicillin.

What are you more likely to blame the rash on?

  • I'd blame the Amoxicillin.  The same thing happened to DD after only 2 doses of Amoxicillin.  I gave her the afternoon and evening dose.  By bathtime she had a red blotchy rash on the back of her neck and all down her tummy.

  • Ava is allergic to the amox also.  She broke out in a rash a day after finishing the medicine.  And the rash was all over her entire body.  Just all showed up at once.  The dr wasnt positive it was from the amox but it is in her charts anyway.  Dont want to risk it.  And I am also allergic to amox.

  • I say Amox. My DD is allergic. She was given the amox and within one day she was covered with a rash from head to toe.
  • I vote amox. DS was on it and broke out all over his back and tummy after about a day and a half. We switched meds and he was fine. Not totally 100% but like a PP said it's in his charts just in case.

  • Amox. I have the same allergy-it's not life threatening (in my case) so in an emergency I could take it, but whenever I need antibiotic I am always prescribed something different.

  • I'm allergic to penicillin.  My allergy appeared in my early teens.  i got a horrible rash, very itchy and incredibly swollen all over--ears, mouth, etc.  I had to go to the emergency room.  It sucked.  I would probably blame it on the meds.  But, the only way to find out if it was the soap is to wait for the rash to go away then try the soap again when DD isn't sick and on meds.  If she doesn't react, then it was the meds.

  • Soap, but that's because soaps/lotions/etc often give me rashes.  I have to be pretty careful about what I use.
  • I vote Amoxicillin.  DS had an allergic reaction when he first had amoxicillin.  My Mom and I are also allergic.  My doctor told me about 40% of people have a reaction to amoxicillin.

  • It's very common to get a rash from amox that is not an allergy. It happens after the third day usually. DD had this once. We held one dose (per pedi) of amox and then restarted in the morning. It never progressed or increased severity.

  • That's most likely due to a slight Amox allergy.
  • It's never happened to us, but my friend's DD had a reaction/rash from Amoxicillin.
